Guitar lesson fiasco

Guitar lessons

So I finally figured out how to post to the right forum. I posted this same message to the Saying Hello forum. Ooops! Okay...I have been taking lessons since July four times a month with a really nice guy. However since then I have only learned two and a half songs, Blackbird and Walk the Line. These are great songs but nothing I would've chosen. I knew how to play and strum chords, change keys in songs, pick up three and four chord songs from videos, radio etc so I wasn't brand new at it. I just thought it would be cool to get much better and even learn to play lead. I write lyrics which come with the music for the song as a packaged deal so I really have no choice of what chords they need but I would like to find more interesting ways to play them and find the chords that they need. It seems as if I would've gotten better by now. I can type 75 wpm so I think if I ever get the hang of it my fingers would have the dexterity. But in all honestly I really never got very good at the two songs we worked on. I did practice. I would keep the guitar by my chair and pick it up a lot. As I have always been primarily a singer I often go back to what I know and can sing with. With the new songs singing is a lot like patting your head and rubbing your stomach.
Thanks for listening and if you have any ideas please let me know. I really can't afford this if I'm not going to get any better.

Hi Marquita620, I just tried patting my head and rubbing my stomach, I didn't realize it was so difficult, so that's a good analogy if that's the right word, it could be that you just don't like those songs, I personally wouldn't play a song I didn't like, I don't like a lot of good songs it's a matter of taste, you appear to have a bit of a mental block with these tunes so it may be best to change tack, there's nothing wrong with choosing songs you like to sing in my opinion that's a good thing. As you appear to have hit a brickwall it might be best to change tack, I don't know if you play fingerstyle but if you want to learn, it can add another dimension to your guitar playing and breaks things up a bit, it would be good to work on more songwriting as well writing a song naturally forces you to think of a tune, as you sing this could be good for you and definitely rewarding, if you practice singing a few songs you like and mix it up by playing around with songwriting projects and a bit of music theory you may get more enjoyment out of playing. If you don't like songs don't play them, your song choices are more important if you are playing to an audience as you need to keep them interested but if you're playing at home you can play anything you want to when you want to and how you want to. As you improve you can go back to those songs again but if you don't learn them it won't matter.
Don't know if this helps but if it helps a tiny bit it was worth writing.

Cheers

Chris

Try adding passing chords to spice things up. Augmented and diminished chords. Swap chords for the same chords played as 9ths and 13ths etc,.
