Picking with a pick/plectrum

I find fingerpicking easy and I dont have to look at the strings... no problem there. But I want to use a pick and pluck at the strings and find it difficult to do so. When I fingerpick I use my pinky as an anchor on the front of the guitar ( for lack of a better word) for placement and am wondering if that is a hindrance and if I could use it with picking with a pick/plectrum? Is there any 'magic secret' I can use to improve? I am finding this quite difficult.

Thanks in advance. You all are so helpful.

Sounds like you are talking about Hybrid Picking. Have a look at this video demo Hybrid Picking Demo Video

Planting the pinkie is a waste of a perfectly good finger IMO.

If it works for you, do it.

There're plenty of "unorthodox" guitar players (check out ~2:25) out there who seem to do just fine.

i cant access the vid on hybrid picking (wish I could) but did look around on the net to see what it was. Actually I wasnt referring to hybrid picking. I was talking about plucking the strings with a pick when you play. Certain strings sound better being plucked first (the root) and I am having a difficult time finding the strings when I have a pick. Using my fingers seems effortless. Does that make sense?

Maybe you can try playing using finger picks. There are picks you can put (wear?) in your thumb and other fingers. These are not the flat picks and any music store must have them in different types / colors.
Hope this helps.

If or when you try a thumb pick, I heard of a good way to make playing with them easier - you will probably find that it is too long and 'gets in the way' when you try to pick strings with it. If you get the plastic type, you can use a nail file or emery board to file down the picking part to a length and shape that suits you. A bit of experimenting will give you a length and shape that feels best for you. They are really cheap so a few filing 'mistakes' won't matter.

Y'know, that is an awesome idea! Thanks! I am new to this and of course I have seen them but didn't think about ME trying them. I will try and get to the music store in Taegu soon. If I can find this thread again ( ) I will post back. Thanks again!

I see a lot of good flatpickers that use their little finger to anchor their position. I agree that you should do what works for you. It seems to be especially helpful when you are soloing instead of just strumming. I have the opposite problem and can use a pick but cannot for the life of me get all my fingers working together at any kind of speed. Man I really want to do that. Wish we could share our techniques!!! The thumb pick may work great for you. Rockerbob has a great video in this site with hybrid picking, check it out!
