Help on Travis picking need 3 cords
I need 3 cords in the key of ? (don't know) using Travis picking style that can produce a loneliness (sad) feel and sound. Can you please show with string and fret position on how to finger pick it, also is it possible to add a sound clip on how it would sound, that would be most helpful.
Thanks so much

You'll probably want a minor key.

Hmmm
Am Dm and Em (Em9)
not sure you can get any sadder than that. If you can do barre chords you could try the Am and Dm by barreing at the fifth fret.
as foir pattern? let your ears decide ..get creative. I always like patterns that let the high e string ring out to the next bar of music

Lcjones, thank you so much. Your help in answering my question is most grateful. I am listening to your lesson on " Requiem For A Summer Rain" as I am writing to you. It's going to take me much practice to get the hang of it, but I'm going to try my best. It truly opens up a new musical avenue for me for my song that I am working on. The songs title is " Cigarette", its about a US "Navy Seal" soldier who is homeless. That is why I am searching for a sound that produces a loneliness ( sad) sound and feel. I say to myself " I can't play guitar. I can play 3 cords. I can tell a story.
Lcjones I will probably need much more of your help on this to finish this song.
Thank you so much

Thanks windsong. I appreciate your thoughts. Also, keep in mind melancholy or achieving that beautiful "high lonesome sound" does not necessarily require a minor key or minor chords. Ofttimes a simple G F C is all that is needed. It's all in how you express the chords and melody. Spend some time listening to some bluegrass music and I guarantee you'll find some great melancholic chord progressions. Of course, a really good Am now and then doesn't hurt a thing.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
