Reading Chords...

So I am trying to learn this song here...

WILLIAMS HANK JR, country boy can survive Tabs, Lyrics, Chords for Guitar

I know all of the chords but am still new to reading how to play this format. For example in the first line, they say play D chord above the word "the" and Am7 above the word "end"

So do I just strum the chord above the word once or what, how do you know how to strum to that type of chording?

You would play the D from "the" and change to Am7 on the "end"
I don't know the song but after a youtube listen I think you play it with mainly just downstrums (D)d d d d (Am7)ddd(G)dddd (D)ddd , this seems to work ok with tab.

Seems like I've been having one of those days
Since sometime back in 1998
And a turnaround is surely on the way
Or maybe that's me spinning down the drain

So you'd just keep strumming the same chord until the next one comes up ?

Yep , or you could play as an example in the D section pick the d string open followed with 3 downstrums ,Am7 open a string then 2 strums , G section low e string 3rd fret 3 strums.
Hope the above makes sense and is of help.
