Question hammer on's/pull off's

yea im having trouble with hammer on's and pull off's. well mostly pull off's. i think i can do hammer on's although they are pretty quiet and i know they require some strength. im confused about pull off's, i keep hearing that they are the opposite of hammer on's but am i supposed to stike the note with another finger or just pull off hard? and now it seems every tab i look at has h's and p's so i really gotta learn it.
any advice would be greatly appreciated. thx!!!!

by the way im working on "the man who sold the world" by nirvana

Hi r1p32,

Have you had a look at this http://www.guitarforbeginners.com/pulloff.html

and this http://www.guitarforbeginners.com/hammeron.html

If you haven't. It might help you out.

Cheers

When I try to learn a solo I always find the notes and, if you play the solo with the correct notes the pull offs/hammer on or bends will come automatically, If I focus to much on the hammer on/pull offs it's more difficult, try to learn the correct notes first

Hope that makes sense ...lol

yay i can play tht song so i can b of some help
but hopefully u will understand me

well you just need to keep at it really(practise)

there are two different ways to do a pull off
1:like in the case of this song by nirvana you have to strike the 2nd fret and using that momentum you have to hammer on the 3rd fret and release quicly
2:in some other cases when there is just a pull off first and no hammer ons.you have to strike that note and let go to the other note
EG: e(string)------3p2--
there u strike the 3rd fret and release to the second fret..so ...ur fingers should b holding both frets at the start and then when u strike the first note take away the finger on 3rd fret and then u have accomplished a pull off!(as simple as that)

hammer ons are actually harder than pull offs as u need to hit the string accurately and b careful not to hit onther strings at the same time, pull offs require no such strain

a good excercise is

e --1h3p1------(repeated)

to do this excersie you have to just hit the string ONCE and then use your momentum to hit the 3rd fret and release it quickly so it doesnt lose pitch.just keep your finger stationary on the 1st fret u dun have to move it in this excercise

im just an average teen with nothing to do....(but play guitar that is)

curiosity got the cat promoted to lion!!

Dont worry this is normal

I was exactly the same when i started, Truth behind a pull off is....well just pull off. If your not using an amp then the sound will be extremly queit and you wont hear it. However, plug your amp in and add distortion and ull soon get some results. If this doesnt give you any luck, Ill show you a small video on how its done by me

I think it just requires practice. I play something like this to practice hammer ons and pull offs

....1.2..3.4...1..2.3.4 <--------==== left hand fingering (sorry for the funky periods, couldn't get it to line up right)
a-----------1h2h3h4-
E--1h2h3h4--------- .... and continue all the way up the strings and then

e--4p3p2p1----------
b----------4p3p2p1-- .... back down. move up a fret and repeat until tired

its hard to do but try to achieve equal volume throughout.
Hope this helps and good luck.

I can get a good ring on my acoustic with pull offs. I just kinda give the string a very slight "flick" when pulling it off to give it that extra little sound.

Yeah, I do something similar. When I'm doing an extended legato, the only way I (and being egotistic and narrow-minded, I'm assuming that YOU'RE the same) can sustain sound for an extended period of time is by doing this sort of "ripping" thing, which I'm sure has been discussed at length and named better elsewhere. But what this "ripping" constitutes is essentially what it sounds like- pull your fretting fingers up (I don't mean off the fretboard, I mean toward your high E string) and pluck as you release. As if you're kneading dough, maybe. Imagine that you're fingerpicking with only one hand.

Eventually this becomes second nature, especially when you're zonked out in front of the tube and whippin the bejesus out of that fretboard, so don't sweat it if it seems difficult now.

delondcosta27 thx
in the second exercise, the pulling off on the 3rd fret makes the sound of the 1st fret? if it is then what makes the sound of the 3rd fret?
