A Playing Tip

At some point in your practice, be sure to spend enough time standing up to be comfortable doing it.
There are many good reasons to practice this way.
You will depend more on your spacial and sense of touch rather than using just your eyes to see where your fingers are.

It gives you a break from hanging over your guitar looking at the fretboard which can cause tension in your neck and back.

It can be a rude awakening when you start to jam with others and you are expected to be standing. it has a different feel to it.

I find that playing standing gives me more access to the frets past the 12th fret especially playing electric or using a slide that high up the neck.

It is easier to concentrate on singing when your not focusing so intensely at seeing the neck.

Try to incorporate some standing playing in your practice. it will feel awkward at first but, it will speed up your learning curve as you rely less on your eyes.

Great tip, AT.....and one I'm guilty of not doing enough. I end up sitting a lot as I'm watching/playing along with lessons on the computer and playing familiar stuff while standing has an entirely different feel to it....what was easy while sitting suddenly becomes a bit more difficult!

I never seriously tried playing while standing. The neck becomes way to floppy for me if I go that way. I once attended a concert from Clapton and I noticed he was sitting on a chair almost the whole concert. I guess if that's good for him, it's good for me

I had the opportunity to play during choir practice recently and had to stand. There was a bit of a learning curve I can see where it is good to know the feel and stance of a guitar and strap.

I find, that most of my playing is sitting down. When I do stand up and put a strap on, it feels like I'm starting again.

I make it a point to stand up, because then I start moving to the music. It gives me a different sense of the music.

Something else I do is play with my eyes closed, it's quite amazing to get you listening to what you play. Instead of watching what your fingers are doing.

Cheers
Makn

And most importantly, how can you rock out sitting down?

Tough to do cool rock poses sitting down. Of course there's less chance of falling on your face sitting down.

I use a strap even when seated. My guitar is in the same position sitting and standing.

Good advice there AT! I practise 90% of the time standing and only sit when I'm playing acoustic. Soon as I get another strap pin put on the ol' acoustic, I'll be standin' with that too.

Stupid question - how do you tie the strap to the headstock? I see a shoelace sold with the straps but I wonder about the best method for connecting so the strap does't let go.
