How do you palm mute while fingerpicking?

I started out with a pick, but this site's lessons and laziness has turned me away from the pick. Now I can't palm mute without a pick, and I'm not sure if I should learn with and without a pick.

Another disadvantage of using a pick: speed. Yeah yeah, I don't need to play fast. I can play a nice slow melody. But I want to be able to play fast. Its very exiting to hear a fast run. Should I just learn legato?

When fingerpicking I often mute the bass strings. I play with a thumbpick a lot, and play Tommy Emmanuel/Chet Atkins pieces which require the bass to be muted.
You can learn to play fast runs using just your fingers, but if you wish to be a well-rounded player I would still practice with a pick as well.
Legato is great, but not always what you should use. It offers a different tone, and the passage you are playing may require something else.
