Where to start again?
Hey everyone. I played guitar in my teens and early 20's but stopped playing after not have the time to play anymore. I bought a Fender Squire Strat from a neighbor last summer and I banged away on it for a couple of months and quickly got bored. Just this week I went to a yard sale and found a Gibson Epiphone SG with a 10 watt studio practice amp for 50 bucks. Well needless to say my interest in playing is back but I don't know where to start from again. I don't know scales, I know some chords and I can play only a very few songs and many parts of songs. I know this is going to sound stupid but where do I go from here? I'm not very good with delayed gratification. Any advice would be great.

Brand new to playing the guitar?...read this first.
Try checking this out, and then get ready to set aside your impatience. Playing will require time and practice. There is no magic bullet to be had. I stopped playing as a kid 40 some years ago and began again last fall. I know about frustration at times.
Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.

I started with the goal to play "Good Riddance" by Green Day. I'm gradually working through all my favourite songs. I found it important to learn them the whole way through rather than just snippets. So pick your favourite & go for it!

I rediscovered cowpie today. I am a big country fan and the songs are in tab or in the chord form. I like to make a song my own so this is so cool. I have the chords right in front of me and I can go from there. Kinda like what Bruce Springsteen does when he does an acoustic set. I am so stoked I found cowpie and GfB&B. I am in heaven.

Good to hear, mitype2! Cowpie has a ton of songs, and you should be able to find plenty that you can play just using "cowboy chords" (open chords) to have some fun with! Another one you might want to check out is Tab Country.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
