For a beginner, I'd recommend a multi-FX pedal. These units electronically emulate the popular individual pedal types, so you get a flanger pedal and a compressor pedal and a distortion pedal etc all in one unit.
You can also more than one pedal together and save the result as a patch. Most of them also have a built-in tuner, and a simple drum machine - don't dismiss these, as the two most important aspects of playing with others are being in tune and being on time!
Models? Look for Zoom or Digitech - anyone recommend any others?

Depending on budget, the Behringer X V-amp could be an option. POD could also deliver something good, but at a much higher price.

I have a old Korg AG100 something, picked it up for €40 2nd hand but ots a great unit with enough features to anyone happy like drum machine phrase trainer and 10 seconds of looping to jam with.
Or a baby pod, looks a great piece of kit!

I recently bought myself an Ibanez Tube Screamer Reissue. Sounds quite impressive through my Vox AC30 using my Fender Strat.

Why would you bother in buy a cheap stuff? You would regret it when you start to grow up as a musician. You´r gonna start to realize that your tone is also "cheap" and "plastic". I sugest you to check this one out
Line 6 - Floor POD If you dont have that much.
Line 6 - Floor POD Plus if you save a little more....
Line 6 - PODxt Live this is what I have and i never turn back again into anything.
Do yourself a favor and get one of this. You wont regret it. If you have a question or you want an specific tone or sound effect you would like to hear i could record it for you

I hear the VOX Tonelab SE is quite a good unit too.

i've been looking into the toneworks ax1500g, not a bad bit of kit, if you log on to korg.com and navigate through "gear" you will be able to find video demo's of korg/toneworks pedals.
for a little more money you could go for the boss me50, now that looks like a tasty bit of gear too, do a youtube search of boss me50 and you will find plenty of demo vids.
I am in favour of GT's comments. I think the logical thing (for me too) would be to hang on till there are enough funds to get the best you can.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
Buy it now for only $10 |
