Nylon string guitars will be easier on the fingers. Steel strings will take a while too get used to and cause quite a bit of pain when u start out.
I'd say nylon strings are easier/"better".
I miss the comfort in being sad

My 2 cents... If you want to strum get a steel string. If you want to fingerpick then the Classical (nylon) will be easier on the fingers.

I`m with fly on this one - for simple strum along songs, I reckon the steel string has the edge. A nylon stringed guitar may be easier on the fingers initially but it doesn`t take long to build up callouses if you practice regularly.
Best advice though is probably to try them out and see which YOU prefer.

I play almost exclusively on a steel string guitar, it is what I have learned on and my fav style of playing is fingerstyle.... so when I play on my little classical... it don't good to me
I think in the end it comes down to what you prefer. no right or wrong. It is genearlly accepted that strumming chords is best suited to a steel string, but then have a look at Willie Nelson stumming away on his ole beaten up classical

well guess ill add my two cents here
id say if you want to hang around with your friends and play some songs and party an acoustic is the way to go (steal string) if you are more interested in just playing for your own enjoyment then you could go with a classical (nylon string) and also remember...most guitars in the stores have not been set up to play at their best...ie adjustments to the action and intonation...it would be best if you could take a friend who already plays guitar with you when you buy yours and definitely ask if the store will set the guitar up for you ...makes all the difference
