help needed

hi everybody, this is just a simple thing that i would like cleared up for my benefit and it is this, what is the correct way to number the strings ie-is it from the thick e-string to the thin e-string thus making it 1-6 or is it vice-versa from the thin e-string to the thick e-string,its just that some sites have them different and i would like to know the official one if there is one that is. my practising has been rubbish all day cant seem to do anything right guess i should go and play the blues if only i could forgot to say i was babysitting the grandchildren and you know what they are like with your pride and joy (my walden))

E, A, D , G , B , E. They are sometimes numbered, in the opposite direction -- from treble to bass -- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
So vice versa

If everything has a point, well then I must have one, too.

The skinniest string closest to the floor is the 1 string. It is called high E because of it's pitch, not it's position in relation to the floor.

Our cat, the late Buster, hated augmented chords. Strum it once, he'd glare at me; strum it again and he'd leave the room.

Why did they call'em out this way ? Since the first note on a keyboard is a low note. Just curious ?

It makes sense to me because even though the low strings are "high" on the guitar, they're the lowest notes. The string numbering makes sense because things are often numbered from highest to lowest (i.e. athletic rankings/standings, etc.), and the first string (treble E) has the highest notes.

Tab looks kinda backwards when you first read it, but then it makes sense that the "low" strings (note-wise) are on the bottom - it's sort of similar to a music ledger, so maybe it draws the familiarity from there.

Kirk - that was a cat with very refined and particular musical tastes!

If you look at it from the perspective you would "read" text in the english language it would be the first note.

i.e. left to right

I have no Idea if this has any bearing other than thats only one way to look at it. Guy who started penning music may have been right handed and started counting there.?!

It has always seemed backwards to me!!!! I thought maybe I was the only one. High E is the lowest string....low E is the highest string. When your looking at tab it seems exactly opposite of what it seems to me it should be!! Egad!!!!!!!!!!1
