I'm excited!!!

I know most of you guys are way above my level of playing! I can change chords easily, and my ear for jamming is pretty good! However I have basicly been a strummer. This week I have been really working on learning some runs to use between chords and all of a sudden today they just fell into place!!!!! I'm tinkering a little with the fingerpicking but am really interested in learning to play some lead guitar with the pick.
See, I don't even know the correct terminology. I still don't understand the difference between runs, riffs and licks. Are they the same? :smilinguitar

Pretty much the same as far as i know. I usually lay down a few tracks to make it seem like i'm adding fills and licks. I wish i started playing years ago so my fingers could do it all tho

Great stuff AD. Runs and licks are pretty much the same but riffs are different. Riffs are kind of the main theme to a song and they tend to repeat all the way through. Think of the opening to 'Smoke on the Water', 'Louie Louie', 'Day Tripper', etc.

Just out of curiousity Doty, how long have you been playing? I'm trying ot gauge how long it might take me to be able to "jam".

I'd say runs are from chord to chord... licks are "tricks" like combinations of pull offs and hammer ons. I'd also venture so far as to say runs are "rhythm" based and licks are "Lead" based.

Dead on with the Riff description though. Riff is an identifiable combination of notes that are usually associated with a particular song:
I.E.
Daytripper
Crazy Train
Green River
Folsom Prison Blues
Wish You Were Here
Dueling Banjos
ect...

Remember, wherever you go... there you are.

Thanks guys for the education and the support. AT I think it'll be a long time before I'm brave enough to post!!
I've been playing about 11 months, but I'm probably a slow learner!!!
