Newb looking at tabulature online..bad idea?

Hello,

I enrolled at a local community college so I can take "beginner guitar 1" and the class starts in early may. Sitting next to me is my new Washburn D10S and I am eager to start.

I really want to learn some Pink Floyd...especially "wish you were here" and found the guitar tabulature for it. (A coworker explained a bit how to read it).

Should I stay away from that and just focus on learning chords until the class or not to worry?. I have NO prior musical instrument experience..not even waay back in high school.

Thanks

Go for it - You know you're dying to.
It won't do you any harm to have a go before your official lessons start. Get your friend to help you with anything you don't understand - or ask us.

Knowing some basics would help. These mini lessons

It is ok to mix up your playing to keep it being fun. Learning chords helps you understand what is going on with melody in tabs. The path of learning guitar isn't written in stone.

I did that last night..learned the G,D,C,Am last night. I was able to switch between G and D pretty well after a little while. After tonight I am starting to feel fingertip pain of course...

yeah, tabs aren't going to take you off the scope of "taught" guitar...

Wish you were here intro is based around the Gmaj chord.

Stanza is:
Cmaj, Dmaj, Amin, Gmaj with turnaround of
Dmaj, Cmaj, Amin, Gmaj

I hope thats not in violation of any copyrights...

Remember, wherever you go... there you are.

It is a big help to know the basic's of learning to play. But if you got someone to guide you, go for it. Just keep that spark for learning alive.

Now when I talk to God he said he'd understand, Stick by me I'll be your guiding hand. But don't ask me what I think of you. I might not give the answer you want me to.

I agree wholeheartedly with what Allthumbs said. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy - have fun with it!

"I wish I could play that fast - then I would have the option of not doing that."

As an absolute noob myself, I wholeheartedly agree. I get a spark of excitement when I'm able to string 8 or 10 notes together that actually sound like a given song. When someone says "Hey, that sounds like the beginning of "Enjoy the Silence!", it makes me stop and say "Wow, maybe I can do this!"

I read somewhere that learning to play was a sort of negotiation between you and your guitar. I now believe it.
So much to learn, so many callouses to build.™
