It sounds so cool but.....
I was listening to one of my guitar heroe's albums, 'Glow' by Peter White, the other day and in the sleeve notes it says 'My producer wanted no strumming and I wanted no minor 9th chords.. you will hear both on this record !'. I thought ,"hmmmmm, wonder what a minor 9th sounds like and if it's as cool as a major 7th ?" . So I dig out my Chord Finder book and tried one. Now I'm getting pretty good at barre chords but JEEZ, that is a hard one !! I managed an Fm9 eventually but blimey what a struggle ! Now I know I'm only a 13 week rookie and I shouldn't even be thinking about such advanced stuff but, tip o' the hat to the people that can hit a minor 9th first time ! I love country music and jazz and the more jazz guitar I listen to, the more inspired I get ! My other guitar heroes are Lee Ritenour, Marc Antoine, Pat Metheny, Russ Freeman, George Benson, to name a few..

The easiest m9 is to bar the first 3 strings with your 3rd finger and the 4rth string 2 frets lower. The forth string is where the third is played so if you moved up a fret you would be playing a 9th chord instead of a minor 9th chord. The intervals are from top string. 5,2,b7,b3.

Thanks 'Thumbs, I'll give that a shot tonight. I will have to look up what you meant by the intervals but I'll definitely try the chord shape, thanks again. It's coming up on 3.10 in the afternoon here, almost time for me to log off and go home so have a great weekend everyone. We've been promised warm sunny weather here in the UK so what better weather to do a tour of the Cadbury's chocolate factory on Sunday, we'll be jamming the carpark with 75 PT Cruisers !

Good onya, Barry.....I really love listening to jazz guitarists too (Larry Carlton is one of my favorites), but MAN - jazz is some complicated stuff! Lots of funky chords and progressions compared to other types of guitar music.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
