Using Capo... need some help
I am trying to play Bare Naked Ladies "Brian Wilson"
But when I use the capo I will have to change the way that I hold all of these chords. Any helpful sites to reference all of the listed chords when using a capo?
Here is what I have so far(Capo on)
G- Capo on 3rd fret of course, Strings 5 and 4 on 5th fret
D- Bar 5th fret, Strings 4, 3 and 2 on 7th fret
Am7-Bar 5th fret, Strings 5 and 4 on 7th fret, String 2 on 8th fret
I need help with the rest and to see if these are correct?
Brian Wilson (CAPO ON 3RD FRET)
G D Am7 G
Drove downtown in the rain, 9:30 on a Tuesday night
D Bm7 Am7
Just to check out the late night record shop
G D Am7
Call it impulsive, call it compulsive, call it insane
G D Bm7 Am7
But when I'm surrounded I just can't stah-op
(This progression continues throughout the slow intro)
It's a matter of instinct, it's a matter of conditioning, a matter of fact
You can call me Pavlov's dog
Ring a bell and I'll salivate, well how'd you like that
Dr. Landy tell me you're not just a pedagogue, 'cause right now I'm
CHORUS:
G D Am7
Lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did
G D Em Em/C Em/C# Em/C
Well I'm, lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did
(Progression for the verse is the same as intro. Just listen to the song
to get the proper rythym and tempo)
Well I'm lying here, just staring at the ceiling tiles
And I'm thinking about, whoa what to think about
Just listening and relistening to smiley smile
And I'm wondering if this is some kind of creative doubt, because I'm
CHORUS
Am7 D F Em
And if you wanna find me I'll be out in the sandbox
Am7 D G F Am7
Just wondering where the hell all the love has gah-ah-ahn
D F Em Am7
Playing my guitar and building castles in the sun, whoa-whoa-oh-oh
D G
And singing fun, fun, fun
CHORUS
Am E7 Am E7 Am
I had a dream that I was three hundred pounds
E7 Am E7 Am
And though I was very heavy I floated 'til I couldn't see the ground
(Pick up the rythym at this point)
E7 Am E7
I floated 'til I couldn't see the ground
Am E7
Somebody help me (I couldn't see the ground)
Am E7
Somebody help me (I couldn't see the ground)
Am E7
Somebody help meeeeee, because I'm
CHORUS
(With lots of angst, repeat intro)
G D Am7 G
Drove downtown in the ray-ee-ain, 9:30 on a Tuesday night
D Bm7 Am7 G
Just to check out the late night record shop (late night record shop)
D Am7
Call it impulsive, call it compulsive, or call it insane (whoa-oh)
G D Bm7 Cmaj7
'Cause when I'm surrounded I just can't stah-ah-ah-p
The outro is a Secret Agent Man sort of thingy based in Em that goes as
follows:
Em Em/C Em/C# Em/C

Chord shapes don't change when you put a capo on. Play the chords just as you would without a capo.
The capo changes the pitch of all the strings so you can play in a higher key using shapes you already know.
Putting a capo on the third fret means that although playing G chords the guitar sounds in the key of Bb.

You pretend the capo is the end of the neck and count from there. The capo is now fret 0 (=open string). You play the G shape as if the frets between the end of the neck and the capo don't exist. The capo shortens the neck.

You got it. If you capo at the third fret, think of that as the nut on your guitar. All the chords move up 2 frets. With a capo the G chord would start 2 frets up from the capo 5th string-5th fret and the rest of the open G chord on the 6th fret 1 and 6 string. An open A chord would be played on the 5th fret. Is this making sense to you?

Now you need a chord chart, or a lot of theory.
Am7 is X02010
For other chords try this link:

I really like this chordfinder because it shows you the chords on the guitar neck and the intervals.

Edit. Oh no, the site may be gone. I will let you know if it comes back up.

When there are a few variations of playing the same chord do you just use the easiest, or one that sounds the best?
Thanks Allthumbs but the link wouldnt work for me???
Ok I got it to work now but I dont know how to read it lol. Im also using a site www.chordfind.com which is very similar and gives the fretboard as a visualization.

When there is more than one shape for a chord, play the one that's easiest, the one that sounds best, the one that's closest or the one that fits best with the other chords you're playing. For most beginners, the easiest will be the best choice.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
