Hi lle7. Without seeing it for myself, I can't be sure, but usually 'playing in harmony' means that the melody line is harmonized and both lines are played together as one, the way two singers sing in harmony.
I have no idea what it might mean for guitar, but I play trumpet as well, and I'd think it means play in harmony with either whatever else is playing with you, or with yourself.
I don't know for sure, but in bagpipe playing a common harmony is 'seconds' where about one quarter of the band play the tune two notes away from the rest of the band. e.g. where the tune has a C the seconds players may play either a Low A or an E; where the tune has an F# the seconds players play either a D or a High A and so on... (note: the Highland Bagpipes are tuned in G Major)
This produces a harmonic effect that mellows the tune.
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
