What is Legato Style?

Hello Everyone:

I came across the tabs for Neil Diamond's "Play Me" and it says the opening is basically picking the strings in a Legato Style. Throughout the verses it uses just D and G. What is "Legato Style" picking?

By the way, I LOVE this site. It has helped me out so much. I'm having so much fun learning!

John

Thanks for the reply, but I'm pretty much stupid when it comes to the music so I didn't understand anything with the Wikipedia article. Is the Legato a way the guitar is picked?

On a stringed instrument like guitar, you can either pick each note separately or (the legato way) pick some notes but create others by 'hammering on' or 'pulling off' notes that are already ringing.

Legato sounds like notes flowing into each other.Very much favoured by shredders and players that like to play fast. Think of it's opposite Staccato. That is where each note is clearly defined and separate from the next note. Staccato can also be played fast but, keeping the each note clean tends to effect speed.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule

Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
