How do you identify your weaknesses?
hmmm... how can I phrase this?
I have been playing for a couple of years now... 6 7 hhhmmm? I play certain things well and others I dont play well at all. Short of getting a teacher that can show me where I am falling short what can I do to identify areas that I need to hone? I dont like practicing techniques alone, I like making music, it always sounds better to my ear anyway.
We dont have very many guitar teachers above my level where I live. I have to travel quite a bit to get a good teacher, that is the main problem with getting a teacher.
I think that is it in short...

Why not just record yourself and listen back? You should be able to quickly hear what needs work.

You are right Kirk I should probably put more effort into that... I have a couple of multitrack band recordings that I could disassemble to listen to myself play... Yeah I think I will do that...

When my wife yells " turn down that racket!!" That is a pretty clear indicator that I need to work on that area. (Quietly)

lol !
the best way to know your weak points is to acknowledge your least favourite aspects of a particular tune you are learning. Its usually these parts which get neglected the most in practise , due to their difficulty etc .

I am learning a tune by Tommy Emanuel at the moment. It has pointed out a couple of problems I might have. I need some more dexterity in my pinky... More control, more flexibility... I think this song is just the right way of going about it...
About recording oneself, that is one of my favourite pieces of advice to newbies. Maybe i should start following my own advice.

Yep....your weakest point is usually whatever you least enjoy practicing, or tend to avoid!

Even if you perfer not to have formal instruction you can play with others sometimes. They will show you stuff to get over your weak points to keep the jam going.

Well....one thing that I've done in the past is when learning a cover, whether it's a rhythm part or a lead part, I compare that to what's recorded. Can I reproduce that? That doesn't mean that the recording guitarist is the be-all or end-all great guitarist, what it means that I may have the ability to repeat what I've heard. And if I can do that, then I can play like just about anyone, right?
Well, it goes a little further. I can't always reproduce what I hear or what other guitar players can play. But I don't know that unless I try. If I can't reproduce something, say a certain rhythm, then I'll work on that. It it's important enough to me, then I might say that this is a weakness that I need to work on. Same goes for learning leads. Same goes for learning techniques.
It's not that if I can't reproduce that that somehow I'm an inferior guitarist. We're all gonna sound different, and maybe I'll never be able to sound like so and so. That's not the point. The point is I start cataloguing what's important to learn and what's important to just admire
