Different ways to play G-chord
Hey, just wondering how some more advanced players play a G.
I learned (from a book) to play with my pinky on high e, ring on low E, middle on A.
but I've seen a friend play with ring on high e, mid on low E, index on A.
What's the best for chord changes, adding notes etc.? I'm still learning, but I figure it's best to learn right the first time =)
Also, I've seen G as a 4 finger chord too (3rd fret on B string)
I can't really tell a big difference, but then haven't practiced it to see how it sounds in a natural playing situation. Anyone got an opinion on this?
Peace =)

99% of the time, i play a G as
MI..RP
320033
When needed for a quick change say to a C, or G7 i play it as
RM...P
320003
Occasionally ill also play it as
MI...R
320003
or
MI...P
320003
If i have to change really quickly to or from an Fmaj ill play a Gmaj as
IPRMII
355433
as it is quicker for me to do that than it is to change the chord shape. (and G to F is a change that still bugs the hell outta me)

Pinky on high E, Middle on low E, index on A.
I will add the B for effect such as with "Mother" by Pink Floyd. When mother is responding (chorus) I add the B to brighten it from the G chord in the verse. It gives it a feminine shift.

I play it with my pinky on the high E string, ring finger on the low E string and middle finger on the A string. I find this to be the easier way to quickly go to the IV chord(C).
If you need a full G chord with the D note on the B string I use pinky on high E,ring on
B string, middle on low E and index on A string.
Hope this helps,

You can also do what Glen Fry and George Harrison use. 300003. Just a suggestion, I use it now and again. But it does'nt work on some songs.
Now when I talk to God he said he'd understand, Stick by me I'll be your guiding hand. But don't ask me what I think of you. I might not give the answer you want me to.
