  DVD question

...received Plane Talk today and read through the whole book once. Before I go through it a second time, I'd like to check out the DVD. It doesn't seem to work on my DVD player (the one connected to my TV), but it works on my computer. I'd really like to watch it on my TV. Is there something I'm missing or not doing correctly? I can seem to do anything to get it to progress past the opening screen where it plays a short tune, and a little screen (that is so small I can't read it) pops up in the middle. It stalls out after the tune goes through a few notes, then starts again.

BTW, it does the same thing on my computer, but if I click the little screen in the middle with my mouse, then it starts up.

???

I wonder if this could be the problem ?

Video Standards: Why an Australian DVD won't play on an American DVD player

There are three main broadcast standards worldwide. These are NTSC, PAL and Secam. These standards are all incompatible with one another.

For example, a VHS or DVD recording made in Australia (PAL) is unable to be played in a standard VHS or DVD player in America (NTSC).

The only exception is if the DVD is played on a DVD player in a computer. Computer players are able to play different standards, but stand alone DVD (or VHS) players are not.

This means that if you need to create DVDs or VHS copies for Amercia or Japan they will first need to be converted into NTSC. Or if you wish to make a DVD to be played in France, it first needs to be converted into Secam. ( found on a google search )

Hey MikeyJ!

Mine does the same thing too sometimes. I just reboot my DVD player with the PT DVD in it then it plays ok. I then hit the play button and it behaves normally. It doesn't do this all the time but when it does try rebooting your DVD player.

It's probably something in the coding that's just slightly incompatile between dvd players.. For one thing I do not have a universal dvd player. The states use Region 1 coding, Europe Region 2, and so on. I am not sure what the aussies/asia are using. A universal dvd player can play all dvd's without any problem. I think those are set to region 0.

John

Hi guys.

The DVD is in NTSC format, which is compatible with US players, so I'm not sure what the problem is with it. As for the opening section, I do realize that there are more sophisticated menu systems today, but when that one was put together there weren't, at least not on the program I used. I think once you do press the menu button on the player/remote, you get to see the various chapters.

Through a severe lack of funds back then when I put the DVD together (1999), I did it all myself: filming, recording, editing -- everything except the pressing -- so if it looks a little homemade, it's because it was. I figured it was the lesson that was important though, not so much the presentation.

Kirk, I've tried everything. I cannot get the DVD to play past the opening few notes of the tune. It just stalls and starts over. The menu command on the computer and the menu button on the DVD remote does nothing. Any chance you could send another DVD? Thanks.
