Jason,
I purchased it just before Christmas. I have been playing guitar for a long time. Took about 10 years off of playing then got back into it about 12 years ago. Some of the stuff came back pretty easily. But I still didn't have an understanding of some of the physical stuff I could do. This can lead to some frustration when playing along with others, or trying to figure out guitar parts in songs.
I purchased both the Book as well as the DVD. I feel comfortable saying it was probably one of the best investments in my music that I have made. After reading through the book a few times (which is what Kirk recommends) I started having these moments referred to by other PT owners as "Ah-Ha!" moments. That is when you are playing something, or listening to something, and the PT method makes it so clear as to what you just did or heard, you want to say "Ah-HA!". Sounds funny, but it happens.
I would recommend getting the book and the DVD, especially if you have never learned the "whys" of playing but still can play. I recommend it even more if you are new to guitar and want to learn stuff it has taken others years to learn.
Another plus, when you purchase PT, you can sign up for his other Forum. There are several folks on this forum that are there, too. There is an amazing amount of info from those folks. It's like having Kirk and a staff of associate instructors on hand just about any time you need them!
Really well worth the investment.

I bought the P.T. book and DVD about a year ago and went from playing basicly tabs to being able to improv enough to make me happy. As Andrew said, it is very common to have Ah ha moments or "so thats how it works"or "now I get it etc". However, it isn't for absolute beginners, You need to know your basic chords and have been around a guitar for a while. A rule of thumb would be if you know chords and bar chords, can play a couple of tunes without struggling or are stuck in a rut playing the same old things the same way ,then you are ready for P.T.
While P.T. will help you understand and see scales, it is not scale based so shredders and scale runners would be dissapointed. However for the more melodic parts of metal that is so prevelent in Metalica, for instance, P.T. would greatly develop you ability to create those kind of melodic riffs.
It is not uncommon for P.T. members to turn around and sell all their How to books after a couple of months of P.T.

The Plane Talk book is a wonder. I mean I wonder why I didn't buy it when I was 13yrs old. I wonder why I bought other books in the past. I wonderd how a cartoon book could really be helpfull. Although there is a full forum for P.T., it is truely the "central lane" of understanding the guitar, how it works, and the main concept of its musical structure. There are lots of alleys and details that you could get into and learn a lot, but if you don't realize what the main streets are, you will always get lost. I've had it about 6 months and have been trying to apply its concepts daily. It simply unlocks the fretboard to your disposal.

Hi, just thought I'd chime in that the book and DVD are fantastic, and that what they teach is invaluable!
I know what allthumbs means about it not being scale-based, but it's all the same building blocks, so I believe that any shredders wanting to be able to play the changes or jump around keys or have more satisfying melodic moments would also benefit, IMHO. Seriously, if you want to shred, you'll be a better and more melodic shredder for having learned PlaneTalk, just as any blues or jazz or flamenco or whatever style of player would also benefit immensely.

Count me in!
I just ordered Plane Talk a few minutes ago. The testimonials are all strong, and I can't wait to dig into it!

I've got it too!
Definitely worth getting if you can.

Ditto on the complements of the book... I have improved substantially since getting it... I sell it to everybody I come into contact with... It opens the fretboard for you. All you need to do is practice the concepts and youre off to making music in no time...

PlaneTalk is definitely worth a buy. The price of it is NOTHING compared to what it teaches, which is invaluable, as neilsonite so perfectly put it.
PlaneTalk certainly was the best guitar investment I've ever made, besides my guitar itself. s

Jason - in case you need any further incentive (and you haven't already found the link) go here:

You will find many others' thoughts on PT, including my own.

I've had it since the end of May. I could not improvise anything before I bought this book and now I can't stop improvising! It's great and the planetalk forum is great. Well worth the money.

I have two 'how long' questions.
1. How long does shipping usually take? I checked the order page, but didn't see any various shipping methods.
2. It sounds as though a conscious understanding of PT occurs very quickly. But how long did it take everyone before they really noticed they had "locked it in" (see smiley), so to speak?
