That grain is stunning, but 75k for a axe?????????

Did you know that the sunburst finish was applied to cover the bad finish on some guitars, with this being a very early strat I wonder if this was a bit rough around the edges?

Nice looking Strat, but I don't think it's worth that much money.

Give me a break- the opening bid on that thing is over $144,000US. It's not like it's the only one. Sure is purty, though.

A guitar was meant to be played, not looked at in a display case!

It's a refinish. If it was all original it would be worth it, not as a guitar but as a collectors item. Without the original finish it's worth much less.

I cant get my head around a guitar being "worth" that amount of money. Surely the value of a guitar or any instrument should lie in the music that it can produce and the pleasure that that can give.

The description - stored long term in a case - says it all. There are probably £99 copies that have given more value and pleasure than that ever will.

This whole idea of "collectors items" is, to my mind, just an excuse for people with more money than sense to go around saying that "mine is bigger than yours"

Will

I saw an early model Fender similar to that one on the "Antiques Roadshow" once. Don't remember the details other than he unbolted the neck to check the serial. Think it was appraised at $25,000. I was stunned. Had no idea.

$75K is excessive! I have an original which is worth around $25K....must be a Japanese agent (they are buying up all the vintage guitars) trading......

That's a little too rich for my blood! I've never had a collector's mindset, so I can't comprehend paying that much for a guitar.

Guitar Center will soon be selling a limited edition run of reproductions of "Blackie" (Eric Clapton's guitar) - the price (for a reproduction, mind you - not the original) is a mere US $24,000! I'm sure they'll sell them, but it's hard to imagine forking over that much money for something that isn't even the real thing.

No doubt- for that much I could have a whole collection of great guitars. I have 6 right off the top of my head that would look great in my hands.

  check out

Americanmusical.com....they have some custom stuff on there including the Clapton Strat which I bought back last year......it listed for something over $4,000 from their custom store and I paid $2,300. no taxes, free shipping and 6 pay over the same period to take out the sting.....I have gone to our local Guitar Center but found them to be hundreds of dollars over AM....We have a guy there in Nashville that for $50.00 took my Strat and fine tuned it to performance standards, different string, file trimmed the frets (took sharp edges off) and it is about the best I have ever held. U do not have to pay thousands for a good, US made guitar. Gibson and Epiphone are made here in Nashville and the cheaper versions in Chimichangaville....We have 2 Gibson custom guys from the factory who play with us and who have told me my Strat is one of the best they have ever held or played. Style means nothing to me as much as tone and that "comfortable feel" when played. With all the electronics used today, (lineX Pro, stomp pedals, etc) there is little natural sound in today's music. BTW, when I got back into music, I started with an Epiphone accoustic, built up my grip and fingers using Gripmaster and it has done wonders for my playing. I have no intentions of entering session playing again but I play sets with a local blues band of guys 50 and older in one of the local steak house/clubs. It always helps to be able to play with folks 4-5 steps above you...it pushes you to be a better guitarist, broadens UR horizons and heightens your enjoyment of playing...I am new to this medium and enjoy reading what others are experiencing. Don't worry about buying a Rolls Royce, "lookgood" guitar when a production piece, tuned to perfection and adjusted to fit YOUR type of playing....Talk to the pros.....they will tell you it's not the guitar, it's the FINGERS, STUPID......luck to all. Words of wisdom, Will. So much of a guitar is in the setup, I've found. I'm pretty geeked up because we just invited another guitar player to join us a couple weekends a month to make noise- he's an excellent player (he teaches on the side as well) and I'm looking forward to picking up some tips from him over time.
