  Plateaus ♥ >:(

Ok so today I feel like I have reached the Chang Tang of my guitar playing...I don't know where I want to go next and it is extremely frustrating. I seem to be playing the same stuff over and over..and getting bored with it. I am in no way considering quitting, but its the learning process I enjoy so much and right now I feel like I am learning nothing....

Maybe I need an instructor...not do-able at the moment, but I have no one here (physically) to expand my skills along side or to learn from.

Do I put it down for a few days and come back hopefully refreshed? Do I push on thru??? Sigh...
Maybe I'm just in a mood... Usually coming here reading thru all the new posts keeps me learning and a bit more focused...(and entertained..lol)...but today I am just bummed.

I want to understand more of the theory of playing, but I am one of those "hands on" learning types...gotta do it to make it stick..sometimes just reading doesn't take hold. Sometime watching someone else do it makes sense...

What to do?.... I want to keep being excited about my guitar playing as it is something I have wanted to beable to do since childhood.

Quick advice.... I try to do enough different things that I don't get bored or tired of it. But if I find myself discouraged then I still try to run through some exercises and maybe go back and play something that is easy for a while and cut back on what is getting to me. I might would cut back on something that is really getting to me to about 10 minutes... Then do something that I can do well for a while then come back to it. I try to at least touch my guitar every day. Hope this helps.

Thanks kbow...maybe I practice too much! LoL

I find the so called simple pieces hard to play and the more difficult ones seem to come easier...go figure!

We all go through that at one time or other. Sometimes a break helps. You could try going in a new direction. Learn to play something in a different style than your used to. Spanish or jazz. Work on playing along with your favourite tunes or pick a tune and set a deadline for uploading a take no matter what. Make a set list of what you want to be able to play for your friends and family in a year from now and start working on it. This will pass. How are the lyrics coming from the tune you wrote?

Dawn;
What I do when that happens is buy a new book-preferably one with a play along cd track--perks me right back up everytime--another thing you can try is finding someone else to play with, playing in a ensemble or group is so different it's re-vitalizing. Scott

Well someone to play with is still un-found, but a play along with a CD might just do the trick! Thanks USGold!

I've found recently I've started to enjoy transcribing pieces. It helps with the theory and the time just flies by. I'll just do one more bar before I go to bed........next thing I know an hour has passed.

I find working on something new to upload and share to be invigorating - so I tend to agree with that advice - and much of the other advice (like learning a new style of playing) is also really good).

We ALL go throught periods like that!!!

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule

Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!

Buy it now for only $10
