  Summertime Music Festivals

My wife and I just got back from a weekend music festival in Perth a beautiful small town in Ontario. Such a great time. There's two stages set up in the park - the main stage and the acoustic stage. Starts Friday afternoon and goes to Sunday afternoon - completely free. On the acoustic stage they mix people up from the various bands that have played on the main stage and they jam together.
In the evenings if you buy a button, you can pub crawl and see the performers at the various venues around the town - all within walking distance of the park. We've been doing it for a few years now (the festival has been going for 16 years) - we book the bed and breakfast a year in advance it's so popular.
Each year there's someone I haven't heard of before that are just fabulous - last year there were two, Ray Bonneville a guy from Montreal who has a sort of country JJ Cale feel. Sat about three feet away from him in a pub off of main street. And a guy named Gregory Hoskins - he's amazing. Used to play with a band called the Stick People form Toronto. Got a feel of Paul Simon but his lyrics have a darker, maybe more demanding side to them. I don't know why he's not more well known.
This year again there were two bands that I'm glad I saw. Both bands were all female - Ember Swift from Toronto. Very lively jazzy funky performance. And the other band was called Fruit. They're from Australia. Adelaide, I think. If you ever have a chance to see them _don't_ pass it up. I've never been more entertained. There's three of them - all excellent musicians all with beautiful voices. Sounds a bit like the Indigo Girls, I guess. But just so fun to see.

Long post, but I'm feeling pretty enthusiastic and had to tell someone ;-).

-Doug

This summer I have been to three (3) blues festivals. Two in June in the Kansas City area and one in the Quad Cities (basically Davenport Iowa).

Photographs from
Kansas City Kansas Street Blues Festival
and
Gladstone Blues Festival

Hope to have photographs from the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival up on my website soon!
