  Classical gas

im sure everyones heard classical gas by mason williams?

just wondering if anyones heard tommy emmanuels version as well...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adfEj...mmy%20emmanuel

and which of the 2 do you reckon is harder to play?
I know some of TEs pieces are quite insanely difficult, but right now I feel the original classical gas is harder on the fingers? what do you think?

IMO Tommies is much harder. Tommy is a master but, I must admit I prefer the slower pace of the original.

^I agree Marty^

Tommy's is good but the original just has that extra oomph!

Well, I can play the original Classical Gas, but I can't even comprehend playing that version. LOL So I'd say Tommy's is MUCH harder to play.

BTW, if anyone's interested... I made an mp3 lesson for Classical Gas (the guitar only version) a few years ago. You can check it out here:

I've got Tommy's version about 80% down- with about 90% of the speed. I'm not allowed to play it more than twice a day in my wife's hearing now. She's sick of it.

Strangely enough, I was able to get to the point of recognizability within about 15 minutes. Go figure.

wow im kinda surprised that people are saying tommys is harder tbh. not that i can play it properly, but when i see people play the original version, im kinda mesmorized by the dance their fingers have to do on the fretboard, thats what makes it seem quite difficult to me, whereas TE's version doesnt really have that and isnt as fluid

The hard part to the original is the finger picking. The chords are actually pretty basic chords, but it's the finger picking that makes it difficult. Tommy adds some very fast licks that increases the difficulty and this IMO is what makes it "his" style.

Do you have a tab for Tommy's version cshude? Or are you picking it up by ear? I'd love to give that version a go.

Don't forget that I did a lesson for this ... a truncated version ... but if anyone is looking for the first bit, go to Classical Gas

Well, I've been doing both- the main licks were by ear, but I needed a bit of help for the chord runs that tie the parts together. There is a powertab or guitarpro (don't remember which) that you can find for Tommy's version. I've used that as a reference for some of the chords, etc.

Also, Tommy did a lesson himself on a Woodsongs episode (go to www.woodsongs.com and look through the archives to download the video. I don't remember which show number it was).

ah thanks, yeah that does seem to fit

for that section do you just play the chords as they are? because whenever i hear TE play it theres a really really funky, but very fast, bassline in there which i can never figure out and have never even seen tabs for :s
