Everyone can sing to some extent but some are much better than others. It's probably best to sing in your natural voice rather than forcing yourself to sound like someone else. Best thing to do is sing for people whose opinion you trust and act on their comments.

I'm trying to sing too... I'm working on solfege... practicing diatonic intervals... It improves your singing... When you learn to sing without mistakes with no efort, than you can add some efects on it (like that rockish stuff you're talking about)...

Now I remembered I have a link that can give you some intro what I'm talking about:
http://www.ibreathemusic.com/article/44

Learn to sing intervals without mistakes (without sharps, flats)... That would be a good start...

Hope it helps...

I'm glad if it gave you the clue... I find it very usefull, I can actually notice that, after excercising those intervals for a few minutes, I'm much more pleased with my singing...

all best...

I like to say that Rod Stewart is the voice that launched a 1000 garage bands (probably will get this for saying it)... But really if Rod Stewart can sell all the albums he does (and get the good looking women he does) then anyone has a chance at singing!

lol. There's singing and there's right voice/image/act/song/etc! at the right time. I reckon there would be many examples of this in the world of pop. How about Mick Jagger, for starters? But, yeah, I agree Bluesguy. Maybe where singing is concerned, beauty is in the ear of the beholder.
