  Giving a lesson today...

And I'm nervous LOL! I am giving guitar lessons to my 8 year old daughter and her 9 year old friend who lives next door today.
He got a guitar for Christmas and she received hers last year for Christmas. I feel confident in teaching them the basics, but after that they may have to go to someone else.

I can teach them how to read tab, notes on the strings and chords, timing, simple songs, etc etc but beyond that, lol I may have to really rely on this site to get them further!
I have a notebook for each of them that I have drawn diagrams and tabbed out some simple tunes as they progress thru each string and on into chords. I am trying to keep it very simple for now and I hope I don't end up confusing them!! We'll go over things slowly and have a lesson once a week on Wednesdays since they have early release that day and all the teens will be out of the house.
Anyone else have experience teaching young kids?? Is an hour way too long? Should I try for a half hour to begin with?? Teachers-
Any advice?
Thanks! & Wish me luck!

I usually prefer 30 minute lessons for that age group, Dawn. Keep it structured (it sounds like you've already taken care of that part) keep it fun and give lots of praise.
Good luck

Thanks Fretsource! I don't want to overload their little brains with to much info at once and frustrate them...

That was so much easier than I thought it was going to be!! They're like sponges I swear! They actually are fretting their notes with minimal buzz and thunk and can tell me what notes they're playing on the first string

I hope next week goes as well and that they practice the little bit I taught them!

LoL nah, one is my own kid...no luck getting any $$ there! and I doubt the other's mother could afford to pay for lessons. (4 kids and serious medical issues with the youngest) I'll just give what I know for now and if it works out well then perhaps in the future as I grow in my playing I can charge others.

(is that really the going rate?!?) I need lessons myself! lol

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule

Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!

Buy it now for only $10
