Open Mic Nights Website - Canada and the US
Stumbled upon this site a while back and meant to post it up here for any Canadian or American members who are interested in getting out there and playing live to hone their skills.
This is the site openmikes.org : music open mike nights in the United States and Canada - the site has a pretty comprehensive calendar showing dates and venues that host open mic nights. It looks well updated and you can search by zip, town or state.

Sorry to go slightly off topic here Clancy, but do you or Kirk happen to know if they have anything similar here in Oz?

Not off topic Neil. This is the only one I could find - Newdawn Productions - Raw, Real, Rotten and Refined - Perfect but it doesn't have many venues listed nor does it look like it's regularly updated. Probably best to look in your local gig guide.

Could do with a site like that over here as well, is there one over here? I'll check out the area, we're pretty much out of the way here, don't know if my local would be into doing it, the big towns have a good scene going on but out in the sticks there's not a lot going on, there's a local pub that does a jam night but it's a bit like the bar out of the Blues Brothers. I suppose if there isn't a site, I could create one, is that easy to do?

I assume you could set up the calendar easily enough, there are plenty of scripts out there that do that... but as usual it would be the promoting of the site and getting it out there so people know about it that would take the hard work... so not difficult, but extrememly time consuming I would imagine. You'd be wanting to think long term.

I'll see what's around Clancy, might be an interesting project for those long Winter nights, I suppose if it was kept small it would be financially viable if I did it all myself, just sort of a small site with a blog or something nothing fancy just telling people what's going on locally.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
Buy it now for only $10 |
