  Version vs Original

Hello.

I was wondering what songs you consider better the version than the original.

One for me is All Along The Watchtower, by Bob Dylan. But Jimi Hendrix's version is special. Even Bob Dylan said it was the definitive version... Curiosity about this song: it can be read backwards, and it has sense (the last phrase first and you finish with the first phrase), which was the original order it was written in. (Or so I was told)

You Tube - Bob Dylan - All Along The Watchtower

You Tube - Jimy Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower

I even prefer even more Johny Cash's version of Hurt. The original is by Nine Inch Nails. Johny Cash's version is very powerful, lots of feeling, which the original has not. Of course, Johny Cash is dedicating this song to the lofe of his life, who he didn't outlast much, in perfect country style ending.

Everyone I know goes away in the end...

I agree with both of those- typically I'm not a big fan of remakes. What makes the ones you mention work for me is that they are different styles. Another remake that I like is "Higher Ground", original by Stevie Wonder, remade by Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I also prefer both cover versions, particularly Hendrix's. Perhaps surprisingly Dylan was a huge influence on Hendrix. He covered a few Dylan tunes in his time but always put his own spin on things.

Stevie RV - Little Wing is IMO, easily the best version of Little Wing going.. Not Hendrix's.

Simple Man by Shinedown I feel is better than Skynyrd's original.
YouTube - shinedown
It isn't a full version... Missed the beginning, but the acoustic version of this song is just amazing(and this video is acoustic filmed by a fan).

I like Marilyn Manson doing AC/DC's Highway to Hell better than the original.

YouTube - Marilyn Manson- Highway To Hell

Disturbed doing Genesis' Land of Confusion

YouTube - Land of Confusion (live)

I also liked the theme song for the new Transformers movie done by Blacklab over the original done by Lion.

YouTube - Lion's The Transformers (Theme)

And I also vote for Shinedown's version of Simple Man over the original.

Its all about personal choice in my humble opinion ...

AC -DC for me sorry Peptic ...But then I grew up listening to AC-DC and Marilyn Manson is more your age of growing I suspect ...

All along the watch tower Bob Dylan

Hurt - Johnny Cash

But like I said its personal choice , I am not a prude to versions or am I a believer that originals are the best ...

It all depends on who's doing the remake, whether they've done justice to the original by doing a good job on the remake, etc.

In some cases the remake sounds better than the original and vice versa.

For example, I really like Guns N Roses but I didn't like their remake version of "Live and Let Die"

On the other hand, I liked Peter Frampton's version of "Jumping Jack Flash" better than Rolling Stones original.

Fun post. For one I like Nirvana's 'Man who Sold the World' better than Bowie's original. I have a hard time choosing between Matchbox 20's 'Never Goin Back Again' and the Fleetwood Mac original.
