I'd also want to add Cat Stevens to the 60's listing, maybe Joni Mitchell as well...
James Blunt, Alanis Morrissette, Blue Rodeo, Alicia Keys, The Cranberries, Sinead O'Connor, and, of course, our own Trevor/Hilch and all the other talented people I've met here!
james taylor , neil young, original fleetwood mac not this stevie nicks crap . as far as today goes jack johnson is an amazing writer and singer if none of you have heard of him everything he does is amazing, norah jones, sheryl crow ,
Jimmy Z
music is only limited to how deep the twine of life is woven into your soul
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker from Steely Dan, Jon Martyn, Van Morrison, Lennon and McCartney, Bjork, Niel Young, Joni Mitchell, Lou Reed, Sheryl Crow, Tom Petty, Graham Gouldman (From 10cc who I saw live last week, that was a good gig, didn't realise he wrote so many hits for Yardbirds etc.).
My favourite songwiters are the guys from Steely Dan though, I've liked them since they released their first Album, they're good live as well but they don't do much these days.Steely Dan concerts were always quite rare events.
You don't stop laughing when you grow old; you grow old when you stop laughing.
Everyone mentioned were great writers, james taylor and i would say joe walsh, seems everything walsh does i like. As far as influence not sure since i still got lots to learn
I forgot to mention Tim Buckley, one of his best Albums was Starsailor, I left him out by mistake, his son Jeff was brilliant as well, both sadly missed they had the most amazing voices. R.I.P.
You don't stop laughing when you grow old; you grow old when you stop laughing.
I'd have to go with Jim O'Rourke as far as songwriters go. Nobody writes tunes like Jim.
Just listen to Eureka, Good Times, Halfway to a Threeway, The Workplace, Not Sport Martial Art, Through the Night Softly, Fuzzy Sun, Memory Lane, Happy Holidays, Movie On the Way Down, Please Patronize Our Sponsors, Women of the World, Insignificance, Something Big (Burt Bacharach Cover with a twist), There's Hell in Hello but More in Goodbye, All Downhill from Here, Pictures of Adolf.
The guy is a friggin genius! No one else like him out there that's for sure. He has a ton of other stuff, but a lot of it is just drone sounds and experimental stuff that most wouldn't care for. The songs above are all actual songs and not just "noise".
He's worked in many bands and produced tons of songs. Sonic Youth is one of the better known entities he's collaborated with.
He's done some stuff with Will Oldham aka Bonnie Prince Billy who did a song with Johnny Cash called, "I See a Darkness". Here's one of Will's tunes.....
Here's some of Jim's stuff.
This one is done by a fan (the video part) the song is "Not Sport, Martial Art"
And another.... "Happy Holidays"
And another...."Through the Night Softly" (just the intro)
Here's an example of some of the weird stuff he does, some of which, is rather good.
Which I just found out I was playing wrong as Jim so clearly demonstrates here.....(Hey, I was pretty close to most of it and I'm the only one I know of that actually tabbed it out. I knew some of it wasn't quite right, but thought the majority was very close. Now I have to figure out the right way to do it lol) This is just Jim playing the guitar part by himself, but the actual song has many instruments and sounds killer.
Jim's stuff is great! Original and melodic as hell.

Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
