  Fair Use

I can't help but notice a lot of concern over tab, amateur recordings of songs (not re-sold but I suppose it would be fair to construe some benefit goes to the website). Now I think it fair that musicians and music companies don't want folks stealing their products. I like companies to make money, lots of it. But I think some of the industry behavior is excessive.

Not being much of a musician, I can't claim expertise but I would suggest the following to music companies as fair and fair use:
  • A $1 is too much to charge for a song download. Especially if the music hasn't been sold in stores for eons. There's some great stuff out there that deserves access to the market and would benefit from lower prices especially since most music companies don't seem to promote anything but crap these days.
  • When prices and quality are right no-one will steal a song because it won't be worth doing.
  • Quit nickel and diming. It only drives customers away. Most people like free advertising which is all that amature tabs, lessons, and song posts are.

What do you think is fair?

I'm going to avoid going into the the copyrighted TAB, lesson, song issue as it's been done to death here and I think most people here know my views on that subject.

I really don't think $1 is too much to pay for the download of a song no matter how long it has been unavailable in stores. I don't see how that makes any difference really. I think there will always be people who don't want to pay for music downloads no matter how much the price drops. They will always find a way to get it for free.

Just my 2 cents.

Clancy

Grump,

I suppose your right in a way. They sould maybe consider discounting on some, especially not the top hits that fill an album.
It's always about the money.
Maybe the artist should get the bigger piece of the pie and the rest get percentages. Now that would be fair.

Well, copyright is no doubt a sticking point to the powers that be. A buck is righteous in todays world of single song download.

More immediate and worse yet is the intention to shut down Internet Radio because of royalty payments. The vast majority of Internet Radio is produced by non-profit or extremely low profit entrepreneurs. Such as Pandora Radio, Live365, Folk Alley and others.

The proposed royalty fees to be levied against Internet Radio are upwards of 300 to 1200% over and above the royalty fees that satellite radio has to pay.

Those of you in the United States, please join me and many others @ www.savetheradio.org . Join and contact your Congressman and let them know that if Internet Radio falls by the wayside, multitudes of artists and listeners will be deprived of a fundamental human right. The right to play and enjoy the music of your choice.

The deadline has been extended to July 15th, 2007. After that date, Internet Radio may cease to exist.

update to the support of,

H.R.2060 "The Internet Radio Equality Act"
i went to the site http://www.savenetradio.org/ and contacted my reps office per the instructions provided in the talking points etc.
i was informed that there had been a massive call in and letter campaign against raising the internet rates in reguard to this and that the move to increase internet rates had been reversed.
i was also told that my reps office was watching this closely.
