Been playing guitar for 2 months only. Already want an electric guitar.
I bought an acoustic guitar for not too long ago. About 2 months. I started out as a complete beginner and I still see myself like a complete beginner but I´ve learned quite a lot in these months. Yesterday I got a hold of an electric guitar (at a friends house) and I completely fell in love with it and played on it all night. So now of course I want to buy an electric guitar but that would make it A LOT of money spent on guitars in just like 2-3 months time. How long did it take for you until you bought your second guitar?

ragser,
I was probably about 20 years from my acoustic to my first electric and then in about one week I had two. Not being any kind of expert by any means after playing the electrics for a few weeks I believe that I can say that it really best to learn on an acoustic. It develops hand strength and finger flexability and you learn to play without reguard for knobs and distortions.
My acoustic is warped from abuse and hurricane Katrina and difficult to play hince the electrics but I will be getting another acoustic as soon as I can.

It doesn't have to be either or. I play my acoustic most of the time even though I have 7 electrics to choose from. I enjoy them all. Get an electric if they call to you, just don't stop playing your acoustic.

I started playing again last August (had quit for a looong time). I bought my electric guitar first, and then an acoustic within weeks of that one (and several more electrics since then!). It's nice to have both electric and acoustic - I'd never be without at least one of each.

In my opinion it doesnt really matter how much playtime u have before u go electric.
Getting a new guitar can be a great motivation booster

I am absolutely in full agreement, one guitar is never enough and electrics are fun and easier to play .

Gosh, you all are a bad influence on me!
I'm just learning. My Squier strat is enough. I don't need an Epiohone SG or an acoustic.

If I keep repeating this, will it work???
I read somewhere that learning to play was a sort of negotiation between you and your guitar. I now believe it.
So much to learn, so many callouses to build.™

There's really no definitive yes or no answer to that question, IMO. You can learn to play guitar on either or both - it's a matter of what kind of music you want to play.

We've accumulated 7 guitars including 2 electrics just in the past year...lol #8 will be picked up next week. (yay for Taylor!) Its easy to buy more (if you have the $) because each one is unique!
"I NEED an electric for this song" "I HAVE to have a classical for this type of music" "Each of these acoustics has a different sound and feel" see how that works?? And if you can actually play them without making anyone's ears bleed (unintentionally of course) the better!
Dan doesn't seem to mind..I don't like jewelery Guitars and dirtbikes for me and we're both happy!

Hi ragser, D-Dawn summed it up quite well, if your playing different types of music it's good to have a few around, if you've got the cash buy yourself an electric guitar sounds like you enjoy playing electric so treat yourself, I think if you play the guitars you've bought that justifies the purchase.
Cheers

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
Buy it now for only $10 |
