  New Year's present from Kirk

Happy New Year everyone ... I did this little movie today of some slide playing over a nylon string finger style track. I think you'll recognize the tune ...

Have a great 2006!

That was great Kirk. You really put so much feeling into your slide playing. I am always awed and inspired by you! Thanks for being such a wonderful teacher and role model. Getting Plane Talk was by far the best musical investment I have ever made! On top of that you continue to provide us all with added value in the form of lessons and these great forums. Your the best-I just wanted to thank you again and to wish a happy, healthy and prosperous new year to you and Clancy.

Yes, KnH, I played the nylon first, then listened back to it in my headphones while playing/recording/filming the slide electric. I then replaced the camera audio track with the good recording of both together.

aah, i thought as much
did a great job on it sounds very "new-year'ish" hehe

But there's one thing i still don't understand, the concept of slide-guitar (sry, don't know how to better put it) but is that brasspipe something like a barré-help? why is it neccessarily put on the pinky? and how do you grab chrods with that thing on, is one supposed to play chords with a slide? apologize if the questions sound a bit unsmart but i haven't quite got a straight mental picture of it yet

It is not really like a bar since you can only play notes behind it with your finger with it on your pinky. Some people play it on their 3rd finger and very few play it on their index finger. You use the fingers behind the slide to damp unwanted string noise though in Kirks' style ,the right hand does the bulk of the damping.
Your pretty much limited to playing bits of chords that line up across the fretboard for chord parts. I am talking about playing in standard and dropped D. Open tunings are easier to play whole chords since all six strings are tuned to a chord like A,D etc.,but that kind of restricts your freedom IMO so it is too easy to just play generic slide riffs.
An example of a part chord in standard would be an Am7 chord. Place your index finger across the 5th fret. The intervals from top string to low are 1,5.b3,b7. A four string chord. You can see you need to be able to find those "line em ups" all over the fretboard to play well though you can do single note runs. That is one of the things Plane Talk teaches you, how to find what you need on the fretboard.

aaah thanx, now it all makes so much more sense
but your accurate explanation throws up yet another question: does the fact that due to a slide one is limited to play only chord parts at best, mean that one can't play every song in 'slide-guitar' without having to bend some notes??

I am not sure what you are asking. There are some chords that just don't line up enough notes to capture the flavour of certain chords with extensions so You have to finger them instead or play part of the chord with the slide and fill in the other notes with either the slide or fingers one at a time. Some guys can hold notes behind the slide, but you have to have the hands of a brain surgeon to do it well.

You can in fact play just about every chord flavor using a slide in standard tuning, but as allthumbs says, nothing stops you from playing with your fingers as well. You're not confined to just playing slide if you wear a slide ... you can use the other fingers in the normal fashion. It takes a bit of getting used to, of course, having a tube stuck on the pinkie, but 'getting used to' is what learning to extract music from a wooden box with high tension wires attached is all about.

The other important thing to always remember is that just because guitars have 6 strings doesn't mean that chords are not 6 note entities. They're not. Plain old major and minor chords are 3 note entities; the different 7th chords are 4 notes. Some jazz chords are bigger, but there again, you don't need to play all the notes of a chord to express the flavor of that chord.
