If I were in a band
I was trying to think of the kinda style I would be playing if I were in a band.
While listening through some music saved to my computer, all styles from classical to rock I came across some Evanessance. Man I forgot what a truly awesome sound they have.
So, if I were to ever have my own band i'd be more than happy to produce even half the awesome sound produced by Evanessence.
Just thought i'd share that with you.

Each member of the band come together to "Make" a sound... its very difficult to achieve a preconceived goal of a sound from a group of unknown skill or style.
Its different if your a solo artist, you have theoretical freedom to add "anything" to the mix... and just rework the arrangement for whatever you have along for the live performance.
But if you set out to make a "sound like band x" then will you fire the excellent bass player you found because he's a little jazzy?
In a Band the sound is defined by the combination of various styles AND the production of the material.
Remember, wherever you go... there you are.

Not very hard for me to decide, anything (Hard) Rock would be great.
I'd try and play alot of covers by one of my all time favourite bands: Seether.

oh, man! (insert snarky comment here). You left the door wide open for anyone who does not hold a similarly high opinion of Nirvana.
As much as I like to get together with the guys and make noise, we end up spending as much time or more deciding what we want to play and who plays what (especially the other guitarist and myself) than we do actually playing. That's a bit frustrating- but then when everyone gets on the same page, it's one of the coolest things you'll ever experience. At the same time, I enjoy doing my recordings because I'm able to recreate (within the limits of my equipment and playing abilities) what I hear in my head according to what I want.

Umm..... Nirvana was great... But PLENTY have achieved their sound, and better since. Seether is a great example.
As far as what type of music I would play... Blues-Rock or Balls-Rock(aka, late 80's/early 90's metal... Just really IN YOUR FACE with face melting solos and hard hitting drums and bass-lines).

Excellent post! When people ask me 'what sort of music does your band play?' I have to give a long answer... it seems the style grows and morphs with each new addition to the set list.

I think trying to "make" a certain sound could be restrictive, unless you're a tribute band. Far better to make your OWN sound - let it morph, wander and/or settle based upon the chemistry of your band. You'd be more distinctive and memorable that way, instead of being "just another band that sounds like <insert famous band here>."
Some of the best cover songs I've ever heard sounded a lot different than the originals. It was enjoyable and refreshing to hear a different interpretation of the song.
