Hey guys, thanks...
eddie-mon .... takin' the time

A lot of the tunes I do I've been playing for years. So I know them fairly well even if I haven't played them in a couple years. It's just been in the last 18 months or so that I took up electric guitar and put together a semi-decent recording setup. But I've also spent a lot of time reading and studying recording techniques. Just in the last 6 or 8 weeks have I become comfortable in recording settings. I also experiment with my settings looking for tones that I like. What used to take me 8 or 10 hours to do a year ago I can do in 2 or three now. Because I'm comfortable with my equipment.
Having said that, most musicians that have a few years on them develop an ear for listening to music. They'll listen to a song several times and can pretty much tell how it's put together. Beat, rhythm, chord changes, minors and majors, 7th's and in some cases they know the exact key and chords that are being played. Basically I, like many others here on the board, can listen to a tune for 15 or 20 minutes and have it figured out for the most part. I've downloaded songs that I've never played before from iTunes for the sole purpose of learning it and posting it here. I may have heard the song on the
radio so I'm somewhat familiar with it.
So basically for me, it's being familiar with my equipment, comfortable with my guitars and I break down the songs to suit me. In other words, I approximate as best I can.

Although, I do like to be as close to the original sound as possible.
Oh, I also have three day weekends every weekend. Oh, and the Mrs. gets PO'd at me. Apparently I have an 1/8th jack in the back of my neck because headphones are a growth on my head. And the garbage goes out late. And I'd rather pick a guitar than read the water meter!
Hope that helps.....
