The Red Strat Blues

Please note that the movie is a 8 Mb download ... it may take a while.

A friend of mine left his beautiful red Strat here for a couple of days ... I shot this little movie I'm going to use at my PlaneTalk site as a promo, an example of playing the blues without thinking blues scale/pentatonic/modes ... just following the changes à la PlaneTalk.

Wow... that red strat should be blue to play like that! That little clip is a perfect sales tool for Plane Talk. You roam that fretboard with confidence with nary a hesitation with no clangers. I also noticed that when you bend the strings you really do it on both ends with your plucking hand and your fretting hand. Kind of dual string bending going on. That helps explain how you get those sounds. Thanks for posting the clip Kirk.

Terrific Kirk. You've really developed that right hand technique into an art form. Fascinating to watch. I know you developed it for slide but the control you have over which strings you want to mute is just great. I notice too, you do most of your bends on the lower strings and hardly bend the trebles at all. I wonder is that because of pulling down for the bends or simply the way your style has developed? Yet another very instructive video for us all.

Beautiful! Great promo ad for PlaneTalk, which is still on my "list" of things to get. I love how the whole piece feels like you have something to say with your playing. I listen to a lot of blues and you have a great touch and feel in this piece.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone ...

bluesguy, I think what you're hearing is the fact that I'm in control of all the phrases, they're not being dictated by a scale. If you were to go through it all note by note, you'd find that all 12 notes have been played at some point. Scales, to me anyway, are very restrictive, especially the pentatonic which basically says 'here's 5 notes to use throughout the whole tune' ... why not use all 12? The way I see it, each chord in the progression creates its own playground, which stretches the length of the fretboard; chord tones are boss, all other notes are passing tones. So, yes, I'm telling an evolving story that I can hear in my head, deliberately creating these lines, trying not to just let muscle memory do the work. That's the challenge ... making the story interesting and keeping it fresh and new. Between note choice and phrasing, the possibilities are limitless.

Thanks again!

That particular take would have really rocked on a tele with the added twang factor.
