My take on Wayne Shorters' "Footprints"

Thanks Kirk for the backing

I was aiming for a very relaxed improv over this, I included the main theme of the song.

This is supposed to be a backround-music-at-a-sophisticated-party type music 8)

Cool, manwithaplan ... I had never heard the tune (consciously) until this backing track and so never knew of the theme. I'm sure I'll be scoffed at for saying so, but I find the original melody line of the theme -- how can I put it? -- difficult to love.

It's a fun track to play over, though, don't you find? I sure like your harp-like flourish right near the end ...

I have to agree with kirk on this one. I am working on my take of it. I find it a lot more fun to take a bt and put my own melody on top. I can't memorize worth a damn so i couldn't play a fixed melody anyway. I have a ball doing a different take each time i play over a bt. I just go where the chords take me. I just finished a toughie that does't really have a clear melody. It is called Martys maiden. It's my take on a herbie hancock tune called maidens' voyage. You can find the bt for it here if your interested.

I was going to try it with slide but, the tune is all 7sus4s' so the line em ups are mostly on the bottom strings. bummer.

Hey Marty ... I listened to your Maiden Voyage. Excellent. I can hear that you are plotting out a good deliberate melody, not just letting your fingers do as they wish. Nice tone, feel ... I'm very impressed. I can't wait to hear your progress in the coming months.

thanks Kirk. When Norm heard my take he said he liked it but, wanted to hear me do a version with slide. Man that is gonna be tough. I find the line em ups are too thick sounding for this jazz piece. Any tips for tone on this using slide? I tried playing clean but it was too thin. This one is gonna make me stretch. haha
