Oxford Town - a little Dylan
Hope ya'll don't mind a bit of Dylan. Some of the younger players may have never heard this tune before. It's from 1963 when the media proclaimed Dylan the spokesman for a generation. In the heat of the civil rights movement Dylan added this song to his catalog. One chord, G (originially Ab) with a G/C hammer on.

Fabulous, Les. No-one does Dylan like you - it's hard to know which I like best, the singing or the playing, both are terrific

I can't stop playing it.

What a pity that "Mr Jones" is already taken, or maybe you are the Mr Jones, and long ago you worked out what it is that's happening here? No, that's just not possible, it's obvious that like all Dylan fans, you've always known what it is that's happening here

Hi Les
That is a great rendition of a song I haven't heard in a long while.
For us mere mortals who are realatively new to the guitar, what fret/string are you hammering on to the C.
Cheers
Peter

Thanks folks,
Peter, that hammer on looks like this
G Chord
E-------3----------------
B------------------------
G------------------------
D------------------------
A---2--------------------
E------3-----------------
To get the G/C hammer, there are two ways...
G/C
E--------3--------------
B-1---------------------
G----------------------
D----------------------
A-----2-----------------
E--------3--------------
or
E-------3---------------
B-1---------------------
G----------------------
D---2-------------------
A----------------------
E-------3----------------
either one works. But there is kind of a trick. You can chord the G using you index, middle and pinky. I almost always chord a G using my ring, middle and pinky.
Here's the Index Finger Chord
E--------P----------------
B------------------------
G------------------------
D------------------------
A-----M-------------------
E--------I----------------
Here's the Ring Finger chord
E-------P----------------
B-----------------------
G-----------------------
D-----------------------
A----M-------------------
E-------R----------------
Using the the Ring Finger G chord leaves your index finger available for nicely placed hammer ons ... like this...
E--------P-----------------
B-I------------------------
G-------------------------
D-------------------------
A----M---------------------
E--------R-----------------
and then to do the big G/C hammer on just move your middle and index fingers into a the partial C chord position and hammer down quickly. Like wise, "pull off" rapidly.
E---------P----------------
B-I------------------------
G-------------------------
D-----M--------------------
A-------------------------
E---------R----------------
I hope this helps clarify that hammer on. It's really easy to do.

Ha, well, I've got too many songs banging the inside walls of my head, I totally did not answer your question Peter.
The F.
----------------------|--------------------
---1------------------|---1-----------------
----------------------|--------------------
-------2--------------|---------3-----------
-----------3----------|---------3-----------
----------------------|---------------------
Sorry about that!
Les

Can you tell us what the strum pattern is, Les? I've got to give this a go!

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
