Some more finger style jazz - Begin the Beguine
Please note that the movie is a 6 Mb download ... it may take a while.
Another one of the tunes I heard all my childhood: Begin the Beguine.*
I'm in dropped D!
I'm still working on the arrangement ... there are so may ways through it, so many possibilities and so many feels that it's hard to settle on just one. This was a pretty good pass through it all, though.
What an incredible tune it is when you pick it apart like I've done. There's that main melody line that seems to repeat, only it doesn't quite ... the second time it comes along the phrases end a little higher in pitch ... the third time it changes to the minor key ... the fourth time the phrases resolve to new chords. Then there's that neat chordal thing near the end that brings me way back. I've heard the tune many times by many artists and the structure is always the same. The intro is mine, though. The ending needs a bit of work .... and I can't wait for my new guitar to play all these arrangements on!
*The Beguine is a dance with a rumba feel.

Just lovely playing, great interpretation. I like the intro which hints at the melody without actually stating it. Makes you think 'I know this tune' without being able to put your finger on it.
I remember hearing somewhere that in Porter's original sheet music for Begin the Beguine no bar ever repeats itself out of just over 100, something which you've also captured in your arrangement. One of the best versions I've heard is Art Tatum's virtuoso piano version, absolutely amazing and well worth checking out. Julio Iglesias's version is probably best avoided though!
Cole Porter is just amazing, although I haven't heard many of his tunes played solo fingerstyle. I think 'Every Time We Say Goodbye' would sound great on guitar.
Anyway, thanks for that one Kirk. Keep these oldies coming!

Great tune Kirk.
Always been on my list of favorite tunes.
I like the beginning. It grabs the attention and draws it gently into the body of your tune.
Nice tune to wake up to.

That tune is certainly something to aspire to play for a lot of players in finger style. Loved it.

Ahhhhhhh man, what a beautiful piece Kirk !!! That one hit home.
I think that was the nudge I needed to lay down the Strat and get back to my neglected Acoustic Fingerstyle learning process.
I really enjoyed that one, thanks Kirk.

That's a whole lot of tabbing! Maybe when I tie up the loose ends in the arrangement I'll have a look at it, but it's a huge job.

Thanks, mate!
The guitar is a hand made Martin-style acoustic by a brilliant luthier from the Sunshine Coast, Michael Palm. It's gorgeous, almost finished.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
