Whiter Shade - Video

I shot this video a while back to show a friend how I played it. I'm not much of a teacher, and I don't write tab (I bearly read it), but it might give you a clue. I mention the long reach for a Dm/C. It can be played down at the nut a little easier, but since I can make the stretch, I play it that way, to keep my hand moving progressively down the fingerboard. The mp3 I posted in another thread is a better recording of the tune, but this shows hand position.

Keith,

I don't have quicktime at work, so .mov files have to wait until I get home... and that may be the case with others here too.

Quicktime hijacked my pc so after I ripped it back out kicking and screaming, I'm reluctant to put it back on my pc.

Keith,

It was worth the wait - what a great video! Boy, there are a number of wide stretches in that piece, a real challenge for us old-arthritic-farts especially! Thanks for the close up shots - it makes it really clear how to play it.

That the Collings, right? Really nice guitar! Are there any markings on the side of the neck, since I see there aren't any on the front of the fretboard at the usual spots? I would think it take some getting used to to play without those "guides" especially when moving around fairly quickly. Unless there's something on there I can't see.

Marty - the post that (I think) Clancy made about how to keep quicktime on, yet undo the hijacking it does, worked for me, so now quicktime only comes up for .mov or other explicitly quicktime formats.

Jim

Thanks guys!

Yes, it is the Collings and there are markers on the binding. The plain fingerboard is one of the standard cosmetic features of Collings "3" models. I like it, but I do indeed use the "cheaters" on the side of the fingerboard.

Awesome job RB... You got yourself some long, stretchy digits there man. You were born to play the guitar. Nice sound out of that Collings too.

It's fun to see the video "lessons" you're kind enough to share with us.
Really enjoy them all. Like your web sit too. You have some sweet instruments.

Long fingers help. Learning to stretch them is the key.

Yes, that was great RB. Thanks for doing that. I did see the thread before but I hesitated 'cos Quicktime often kills my PC in very quick time too. (But when I saw everbodies comments I knew I had to risk opening it. lol! and it was worth the risk)

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule

Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!

Buy it now for only $10
