Don't Think Twice, It's Alright -- Bob Dylan
This is the Dylan Classic "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" as performed by me and my friend Richard today at his house.
We got together today to jam, and I wasn't expecting to do this song - but Richard had messed up one of his fingers playing too hard on bass last night, and we couldn't do what we originally planned. Richard knows this piece, and can fingerpick it, but because his finger was messed up, I had to do the finger picking part on my strat using an acoustic guitar model from the crossroads pedal, as I hadn't expected to need an acoustic guitar, so I didn't bring mine. I also sang, and Richard played rhythm guitar and bass. And we had the trusty drum machine to keep time, although I lowered that track down a lot, because I don't think a lot of drums fits this song.
I apologize that there is some clipping on the guitar parts and the bass part didn't seem to record very well, but this was recorded on Richard's Fostex MR-8 digital recorder which he was running - and he's usually very careful about levels, but all I have to work with are the WAV files I took home with me from the Fostex, and I mixed them as well as I could. I think my voice came out the best - which is the opposite of what usually happens when I do the recording!
Anyway, I literally have a blister on one of my picking fingers because I'm really not used to finger picking for a long while, but it was worth it. We also made a video recording of us playing this on guitars with a digital camera in video mode, and I'll post that as soon as I figure out how to get the 4 minute AVI down from 290 MB to under 10 MB!!
I hope you enjoy!
Jim

Hey Jim,
You know I'm a sucker for a Dylan tune! Nice job. As for the bass, it was just a bit too in front of everything. Other than that it's a nice piece of work.

Nice job Jim and Richard! A blister's a small price to pay for making some great music. The vocals were good Jim, sounds like that tune's right in your natural range.

Thanks everyone!!
This is weird... I mixed this yesterday using the speakers on my laptop because I've found using headphones to be really unreliable for getting a mix that sounds good on other people's systems. But I actually raised the bass a bit yesterday because I just couldn't hear it on my laptop - it was probably so low/loud that the speakers couldn't handle it and it just dropped out. After Les' comment, I listened this morning with headphones and that freaking bass is right out there in front of everything!!! It's a nice bass line that Richard did though... he recorded it the same time as I sang (into a different input) to save time so I didn't get a chance to hear it before...so at least it's a good part that's a little too loud (on some systems...). Mixing, ah, the bane of my life!
Yes - I think the singing range of this song is exactly where I like it and I really enjoyed singing this and it was effortless. Plus, this is a song that in the past I played many, many times, so it was like singing something I had sung all my life. It was fun!!!
Thanks everyone!!!

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
