A little more Dylan - Boots Of Spanish Leather
Hey Folks,
You know I'm so far out in the boonies there are literally no venues to play. So I hope you don't mind me taking advantage of you and sending music out to you via GFB & B. I'm so far out that when I asked the local telephone company about broadband, they asked me where the girls were playing!
Anyway, I thought I put a twist on things and try something new. This tune is a video! . I hope it works out for anyone who takes a look see!
Boots Of Spanish Leather - Bob Dylan [4.1mb @ 6:26] (yeah, it's sorta kinda long....but I hope you enjoy it...... Of course, the bonus is you actually get to hear my frogs!
Les

Oh, that was great Les. Nice to see who is playing all these songs. Thanks for posting that. Loved the frogs too.

Nice one! I love the setting as well, but you need to turn down the crickets.

That was cool Les. The frogs were in perfect pitch that night!
One technical question. I noticed that you rest your right arm on the back of your guitar and you finger pick before the sound hole. Is this standard? When I try this style I have my arm all twisted and held out in front and I try to hit the strings over the sound hole, and it's not comfortable or effective. Plus, it gets tired!
Any technical advice you can provide is mucho appreciated as I really like that style of playing and want to figure it out.

Hey Canuck,
I don't know that there is any standard way to hold a guitar. It's more how the guitar fits into your body. I do snug the body up under my arm. You can even see that in my avatar.
I think because the length of the guitar body compared to the length of my forearm my picking between the bridge and the sound hole just happened. As well, In that position I seem to get a slightly brighter tone from my strings. If I pick directly over the sound hole I get a lot of "boom". However when I strum, using a flat pick, I'll almost always be up and into the soundhole.
I rarely stand and play. I'm a sit down player. I guess I've been playing to myself for so many years that's just the way I developed. I can play standing up, it's just that I'm more comfortable sitting down.
So I guess, the best advice I can give is what ever is most comfortable to you is what you should do. Of course, the tone and demeanour of the guitar changes where ever you happen to pick at. Below the sound hole, like me, gets just a little bit more brightness (some might use the term "tinny"), over the sound hole you get your volume and more bassy and further up toward the head stock you get more of a muted sound.
Hope that helps.
Les

Thanks Les! A great explanation and much help. Whatever feels comfortable, whatever produces the sound you like! I can tell you that as a hack beginner, the videos (much like Kirk's lesson videos) are a huge help to me. The MP3s are great to listen to, but without the evidence of how they are put together, they are more entertaining than instructive, which is fine. Apologies for stealing free guitar lessons from you, but I do truly appreciate the help.

Fantastic Les!!! And it was great seeing you and hearing your frogs.
Now...about the frogs.. errr...well, I don't want to hurt any of their feelings, but at times a few of them lost count and were off the beat - although their pitch was pretty good. But you may have to have a talk with them and make sure they all practice at least an hour a day. At least you have a cheap backup group!!!
Great job as always - keep 'em coming!

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
