First finger picking tune: Hotel California
Ok, all this talk about finger picking, and after going through some lessons from Kirk, and after hearing some great tunes from all of you, I had to give it a try.
Here's my 11 string version of Hotel California. I busted the G string. (a common occurence on 12 strings)
For someone who has only strummed (with the exception of the intro to Dust in The Wind) for the past 8 months or so, this was a challenge!
My right hand is used to only going up and down and my fingers are used to clenching a pick. But this was fun, if erratic. After listening to it, I realized I forgot to play the bass note many times in search of some melody.
I also found it really hard to get any "noise" or ring from the F chord and had similar trouble with dminor. Is this common?
Feeback is welcome, as this style is totally new for me, but I like it.
Now when I search the house for a pick and can't find one, at least I can still play some guitar!

The F chord is the problem child of the guitar world it seems. Never heard of a problem with a Dm though.
12s are so great for that jangley tone. Great fun. Ya done good.

I agree... I find it easier to play the F bar, than the traditional open F...!!!
Nice job Todd...!!! When ever I can't find a pick, I'll make one out of a credit card...
I just cut it up to look like a pick, and viola...!!! (I'm sure Visa will love me for that...!!!)LOL

Thanks Nagusuh,
You certainly are an upbeat fellow!
Thanks for the support. It is a great tune and I'd really like to hear a skilled player take a crack at it.

Very nicely done CannuckTodd, especially as you usually play with a pick. 12 strings certainly have a special sound I reckon.
Thanks for the listen.

Here, Here, about the wife's cc's. I made picks of those a long time ago.
Nice job on Hotel CA. 12 string is a beautiful sound. I stop in pawn shops all the time hoping to find a gem, but search continues.
One day ...

Canuck,
Good job! If that's your first time out on finger picking, you're well on your way. And to start out on the 12 is even better!

Hmm... credit card, huh? That's a great idea. And a much better use for one!
Wonder what else I could use for a pick. Milk bag clip maybe. I'm sure there are a host of household items. Then again, I could fork over 50 cents and buy one!
Thanks again for the feedback.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
