Right off, I'd like to congrat them that play acoustic gittar exclusively. I've mostly played electric and I'm havin' a hard time soundin' clean since I been playin' acoustic. My fingers feel like they're fat and slow on this thing, but I reckon I'll catch onto it.

This is a cover of the Hag's 'Red Bandana'...one of my favorite tunes by him. 1st (and only) take...I think I got most of the words right.

I'm still hearing the hissing sound...can't for the life of me figger it out. Would the fluorescent light have anything to do with it?

As for the hiss, I had something like it when I first started recording. I was using the mike and sound card that came with this computer 5 years ago.
I tried various fixes (impedance filter, 'real' rock-band Shure mike through a 1/4 - 1/8 converter, mike input through USB, etc.). Got a lot of suggestions from other members, tried what I could.
Still hissing, sounded like there was a fan going or neon lights. I thought it might be the computer humming so I got extension cords and recorded 20 feet away but still no win.

So I bought a digital portastudio, that was my solution. I record in the other room and use USB to transfer the results.
There are other pre-mike devices but I don't know much about this subject.

I know there are members who record fine through their computers.
And the above may not be the reason for your problem, but it was mine.

The thing of it is...I was using a digital studio, a Boss Micro BR, and it's on-board mic. I have a Shure SM57 and a SM58, but it's easy to use the onboard mic and it don't sound too bad for the most part. I'll wait 'til things quiten down and try it with and without the light on and see if that makes a difference.

The hiss might be from the levels being high- usually lights and other electric stuff will cause a hum-type of sound at 60hz. You may be able to cut the hiss down without hurting the overall sound by playing with the eq. That can get a bit trick, though.

Nice job, like your voice. Sometimes a hiss can be loose connections. Its more likely if your using a mic too instead of plugged in

One of my fave Hag tunes, too. Very nicely done, Peyden! Your vocals are always convincing, like you are communicating with someone, and communicating well I might add.

Got a freezer on your back porch? That's what it sounds like to me. Doesn't sound so much like a hiss...more like a buzz, at least to me. But you can't unplug it, huh? Your beer might get warm.

Nice playing and singing on this Astratslinger very enjoyable, I just played the Merle cover you posted and the hiss wasn't as pronounced on that so it could be something in the background interfering, I have had long term hiss problems through the computer which have driven me nuts but like you say you're using the Boss Micro, the Micro's supposed to be pretty good anywhere reasonably quiet as that's what they're built for, I've just read an article on the micro and it's known for having virtually no hiss, it does have a noise reduction tool on it though as apparently you can get a hiss if you use High Gain (which I think CShude mentioned) so the hiss might go if you drop the gain a little bit or use the noise reduction, I've found my hiss is worse on the computer recordings if I record me playing in one go, when I've done playing and vocal separately (which is not my favourite method as I still have timing shortcomings) the hiss is greatly reduced but it depends if you're happy doing separate tracks, background noise or gain seem to be the culprits, here's the article just a review but hope it helps a bit.

I'm attributing the hiss to noise that's going on in the atmosphere, lol. It's less pronounced when I'm further away from my freezer, as Lisa suggested it might be, so that's part of it. Had the window open, too, so I guess it all adds up and the BR records it.

Very nicely sang and played. You can remove hiss pretty well with most recording software, there's usually a penalty on the finished results but at least you can make a choice about which you prefer!
