The Road Home
I had last night's gig cancelled with little notice. A touch annoying as I really needed the money. Oh well!
I ended up writing and recording this piece, even though I had intended to watch the Waratahs play. I did a few takes, and ended up going for this one as I felt it portrayed the emotion behind the piece the best. I had recorded an alternative take with some very fast legato, sweep-picked arpeggios and string-skipping ideas in the middle section, but they just didn't seem to belong.
I am more conscious of melody now than ever. I have speed and flash if I need it, but I have found that I am not as happy with that of late. I think my playing has matured, and the strength of a musical idea lies in the choice of notes in a given musical context, not how many I can play in one beat/bar/chorus.
I used my Ibanez s470 on this piece, with Dimarzio pickups in the neck and bridge. I just recorded it through Guitar Rig. Not really possible to mic up at the amp and run it through my pedal board at home. Maybe I will take it down to the studio soon and do another take, using the amp. Same with the acoustic guitar track. I used a BBE preamp I normally save for the resonator with my Taylor DDAE. I would have preferred to mic the guitar, but I was recording into the PC, so there would have been too much noise coming from the fan and drive.
If anyone wants to have a play over the track I'll post it up here for you.

Nice scotty. I agree the right notes beat the most notes every time.

Hi Scotty! Where have you been?? We missed you...well, I did anyway! That was very, very nice - reminded me of Local Hero dire straits which I have always loved. Excellent

Thanks everyone.
And thank you for your kind words Carol. I have had a lot of things to deal with in the past 6-8 months, so a lot of other things that I enjoy were put to one side while they were sorted out. Not quite there yet, but I am working on that!
Take care

Real nice. +1 to the 'whole bunch of notes' thing. There's a time for that, but it's not all the time.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
