New Samba or Bossa Nova
I don't actually know what the difference is . In any case, here's a first rough draft of a samba I'm working on. I'll add a bridge some time but wanted to share it at this stage. It starts on an Amaj9th and does half step descending runs which I think/hope has a Jobim feel.
It's pretty rough - lots of background noise (my wife was working in her studio) and I missed some notes here and there - but I think you can get the idea.
Let me know what you think.

Doug,
That was nice. As I have listened to both types, It does seem a bit difficult to decipher. On the keyboard the Bossa Nova Has more of an upbeat rhythm.

Pretty. I agree with eddie. Hard to define with those ambiguous chords.

Hey Marty - you're right about those chords. If they were a colour, they'd be taupe.
Thanks, Eddie and Marty.

I have a friend who is heavy into Socca and Latin music. I must ask him this question.

Ok here it is or least what I heard on the subject.
They are a tempo oriented thing.
Samba- Generally found in music of Carnival in Brazil and back yard music usually more of an upbeat sound.
Bosa Nova - More Jazz oriented and Lounge style music.
Although I still see some crossover in both.

Thanks RB and Tom.
Tom - except for the thumb/fingers independance and the syncopated rhythm, it's pretty easy. Only barre chord is a Bm7. The chord change anticipates the bass line by a 16th note - just a bit of practice . I don't quite have it yet.

Nice sound and playing Doug, not sure if tempo is right for a Samba. Seems to fit a slow Bossa Nova better.

Thanks, Knight.
Yes - I think you're right - more of a Bossa Nova than a samba.

I should have noted that Eddie was right too. Sorry, Eddie for not acknowledging your post
Just to recap, Samba is more up beat heavier percussion type music whereas Bossa Nova (which based on the Samba rhythm) is more laid back and uses much more sophisticated extended chords. Bossas tend to be melancholy as well.

Very nicely played Doug, a really relaxing tune whatever it's called! That guitar has a gorgeous tone, mind if I ask what it is?
When all else fails, read the instructions.
