Something I've been playing with

Here's a slow peaceful piece - any slower and you'd fall asleep while listening. I'm hoping it'll morph into something - it's not quite there yet. The recording is pretty noisey - there was a fan near where I was recording, but you'll get the idea.

There's two things I was playing with here - 1) I wanted to use tritones in a piece that is almost hymnal. Tritones were supposed to be the work of the devil but to my ears you can sometimes use a tritone in a peaceful consonant way. And 2) I just love the sound of a Bb major 7 followed by an F major 7. Even though the Bb major 7 is not in the key of C, it sorta works. I think.

Let me know what you think.

Doug, you definitely have something to work with there. It's absolutely lovely as a solo piece, but I think you could definitely add some lyrics to it as well. If you know someone who plays cello, that would sound absolutely killer coming in on the second go-through.

That's a nice mellow piece Doug, it doesn't send you to sleep it holds your attention definitely worth progressing with, I'm afraid my knowledge of scales is limited so I wouldn't be qualified to comment on the tritone but the piece sounded good, sounds like you've put a fair bit of work into this Doug. thanks for posting it

Thanks very much Chris. I like your idea of a cello. It would fit very well with the piece.
And thankyou, too, Starsailer.

I'll take a guess at tritones saying 3 notes played at once? anyway very haunting, and nice listening

Very nice piece Doug, really nice sound. I would love to hear it expanded with lyrics.

Thanks very much, everyone.
I'm not a music expert so maybe Fretsource can correct me if I'm wrong, however, a tritone is an interval of 3 full tones. It is found in Dominant 7 chords and it's the dissonance that gives the strong pull back to the root. In a Dom7 case, the tritone is between the 3rd and the 7th - so for a C7, the tritone is between the E and the Bb. In the above piece, the tritone I put in was between the C (root) and the F#. I left out the third so perhaps that makes a sus4? Dunno. When the tritone was first discovered, it was banned from church music because it was so dissonant. I think as people get more and more acclimatized to things, those things lose their original impact. Western music has the Dom7 -> root built into so much music that we're probably a lot more used to the tritone and it's not as jarring anymore.

Oh, by the way Kenny, how is my little Martin doing these days?

Very nice tune Doug, can't offer much of a critique since I thought Tritone was furniture polish. Beautifully played.

When all else fails, read the instructions.
