Christmas Time All Year

This is a song that Kenny (a.k.a X4StringDrive) wrote and he kindly let me have a go at it, this isn't perfect by any means but I thought I'd have a go, sorry it's a bit late but my tree stays up until Twelfth night so Christmas lasts a long time for me.

Here's a link to the lyrics

You did a real good job with that, you have a good voice but the recording was a bit hazy. Stay with it, fill it out a bit

Very nice Chris, thanks for running with it. Sounds like your getting the noise thing under control. Was this a one track take? I ask because IMO the vox could come up just a bit.
I like how you broke it up with the silence...kinda cool.

Hi Tom, it was a bit hazy, I'm going to have another go and try and sharpen it up a bit

Hi Kenny I promised I'd put it on and I didn't want to let you down as you put a lot of work into your lyrics, this was just a straight take, some of the silence was me winging it as I went along, my Vocal on the verses was a bit lazy so I'm going to do another take today and have a go at the fingerstyle version, the vocal on the chorus was quite high might have to loosen my Jeans a bit:

Thanks eddiez, I agree I'm still singing with the handbreak on and this is quite a happy song, I'm going to have another go today and try and let myself go a bit more.

Thanks for the comments, the feedback keeps me motivated

Hope you had a good Christmas

Chris

That sounded good SS. The playing and vocals were good. My only complaint is in the recording. I really had to crank it to hear, which brought up the noise level. A few tweaks to your recording technique and you got it.

You seem to be able to carry a melody with your voice really well. And your voice sounded steady. Great job!

Thanks Fly, Recording is definitely my weak point and I've had problems with my set up, there's a hiss that just won't go away so I'm going to review the whole thing and nail it, I hesitate to put things on because of the production quality but I want feedback on my playing and singing so I persevere, thanks for the comments on the vocals and playing that's great to hear, hope you're well and that you and your family had a good Christmas.

All the Best

Chris

I really liked that Chris. What is your recording set-up?

Hi Carol, thanks for having a listen, my set up is annoying, I have a creative soundblaster 24 bit soundcard, a standard mic and a condenser mic. and I'm using Reaper, the hiss is the issue, I shouldn't really be getting it but I can't get rid of it totally.

You have a very nice voice Chris, don't be frightened to belt it out a bit! I really liked the tune.
I had a bit of a tinker with it, I couldn't do much about bringing your voice forward but I boosted the volume and cleared most of the hiss. If you had two tacks - vocals and music - I could've got it better, anyway, hope you like it a bit louder!

I can't thank you enough John, it was really good of you to do this for me and a wonderful surprise, I was quite proud of the chorus but I thought my verse vocal could have been stronger, I'm quite an aggressive strummer as well, maybe I should be doing heavy metal.

I'm still quite a recording novice as you can see, my son told me I should do two seperate tracks but I need to work on my timing and mixing skills which are pretty basic to say the least, part of the reason my vocals fade in and out is I look down at the fretboard when I'm playing which is a bad habit I need to fix.
I think I'll have a go at this for Christmas 2008 and do a remix I should be more experienced by then. Kenny's lyrics are brilliant, I quite often get a tune in my head when I read them

Hope you and your loved ones had a great Christmas and have a great New Year.

Best Wishes

Chris

That second mix sounds much better, you have a great voice Chris very Lennon to my ear. For recording I would add a small touch of reverb and slight compression and yes you need to do this on a separate track.

The guitar has sweet tone, again some post recording effects/EQ will bring it to life. I would also play against a metronome to tighten it up a bit but thats only a small observation so please take no offense from that statement.

I might have to ask you a big favor and record some lyrics for me over some music I have in a week or so if you are up for a collab.

Wow Chris that was excelllent, wish I could hit those high notes as easily as you appear to. (wish i could hit any notes really LOL) Agree with the Lennon comparision. It's also better without the hiss (nice one jomi). Keep em coming. Hope the colds better, sure sounds like it.
