First recording with a ribbon mic - Down by the Sally Gardens

I bought a Sigma Ribbon mic the other week, and this is the first thing I recorded with it. It is an arrangement I put together of a traditional Irish melody called 'Down By the Sally Gardens'.
Overall I am pretty happy with the tone, and with some more experimentation I think I should be able to get what I am after.

Scotty,

That was a nice tune, nice playing, and certainly crystal clear.
Almost too clear but very good.

Excellent tone and clarity. As I understand it, ribbon mikes are the 'creme-de-la-creme' but extremely delicate. Would that be right?

Was this recorded in a sound studio, btw?

hey Ian
Ribbon mics are meant to be very delicate - though also very good for recording guitar amps?
This one is designed to be somewhat more robust than the older ones.
It was recorded in my back room, where I have set up all my gear. I have just moved house (again) and this was the only space that really suited my setup. I will take a photo of it sometime.
I am using an Se Reflection Filter as well, which really removes the sound of the room a great deal, and allows for a more focused result. At some stage I would like add in some acoustic foam to try and stop some of the reflections I can hear when playing - especially with my saxophone.

Ahhhhh now that was nice Scotty and accompanied a great cup of tea! I would be so nervous knowing I was coming up to a set of harmonics, and you hit them right on like they were nothing! I keep trying to hit them and it's never dependable! Great piece of playing!

A photo would be great ... look forward to that. Thanks!

"I keep trying to hit them and it's never dependable"

Maybe you're doing it slightly incorrect. Make sure your finger is right over the correct fretwire, just barely touching the string, and lift your finger off the string as soon as you strum the string. It should ring nice and clear every time.

I've heard the harmonic is louder/more clear if you play closer to the bridge.

Thanks for your kind words.
I found working on accuracy was really important. When I started adding harmonics into my playing I worked slowly on them, making sure that I got them right before speeding them up, and adding them into my playing in general.
I had a few stuff ups at gigs early on, but I am pretty comfortable with them now.
I guess it is like most technical aspects of playing - accuracy will lead to control which will lead to more confidence - and speed if we desire that.

Thanks tsidewinder, I'm going to try to play closer to the bridge. Rushing along and stopping to hope I hit a harmonic has been my continual experience.

scotty is right about accuracy before speeding up, something I need to apply to playing well in general. You have such a nice and dependable touch!
