Blue-grasser - Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad
Well, alrighty then
Here's an old time blue grass tune called Goin Down The Road Feeling' Bad. I haven't played this in years and I'm not really a lead picker so don't expect a lot!
For those who may not know, the banjo style I play is mountain style or claw-hammer banjo. I do not play Scruggs style banjo that you hear in most bluegrass tunes. Some folks call it frailin' banjo or drop-thumb banjo. It's literally picked by using the top side of the finger nails and brushing down rather than picking upwards from the under-side of the finger nails. The high "G" or fifth drone string is plucked with the thumb and thats what gives it a "plucky" sound.
Well, anyway, y'all enjoy this tune. Maybe some of you folks may decide to really take good look at bluegrass style music. It's a lot of fun, can be played anywhere and is usually a real hit after 4 or 7 beers!
Goin' Down That Road Feelin' Bad [1.8Mb @ 1:56]
Enjoy!

Frailing banjo is one of life's mysteries as far as I'm concerned, Les. How can you make your fingers play 'the other way' from the guitar plucking - or maybe you learned frailing first? A while back I heard a guy on the radio playing guitar with the frailing method - amazing.
When I saw your thread up on the ticker I thought it was either Hilch or someone having a bad health day - but it was just a typo (probably just as well)
Great playing and singing as always

Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad - reloaded
Hey guys,
Thanks for listening and your thoughts!
I wasn't happy with the original recording so, what the heck, It's been totally remastered at Frogs Open Aire Studio ... I brought the guitars out. Especially the flat picking parts. Those folks who are interested in the bluegrass runs can listen to the right channel. Again, I'm not a lead picker so listen at your own risk!
The original song link above is the new cut .. or you can listen here.

Thanks again!

Les,
Now thats some playing. I might add, without a flat pick, some of those parts just ain't gonna get there.
Great job

Hey thanks guys,
I sent my Mother a link to the song and this is what she said. She just turned 80 and is pretty hip for an ol' gal!
"This is an old one, I remember this one, listening to the battery radio when I was a little girl, even know a lot of the words. I enjoyed listening to it, If I'm remembering right, my dad used to sing this while milking the cows. Bringing back the olden days."

Thanks knight.
Carol, although not directly guitar related, I'll be doing a little thing about frailin' the banjo. As well, there are a few players out there that have adapted the the banjo frailing technique to the guitar! Now that is a trick!

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
